Chapter 7 - The Second Trustee
Caroline had been smarter than all of them.
The document wasn’t hidden in the mansion.
It wasn’t in Romano Foods.
It wasn’t with Robert Harrow.
It was filed with an independent trust company in Boston.
Dante found it through Caroline’s old email.
Three weeks before Leo’s birth, she had amended Leo’s trust.
Patricia was never supposed to be able to become trustee.
Not under any circumstance.
The trust required two independent signatures for withdrawals larger than $20,000.
Dante stared at the paperwork.
“Then how did she take over a million?”
Melissa answered.
“She didn’t change Caroline’s trust.”
“She couldn’t.”
“So she created a fake replacement.”
Dante felt sick.
Robert Harrow had submitted an amended trust certificate after Caroline’s death.
It supposedly bore Dante’s signature.
It removed the independent trustee.
It appointed Patricia.
It also claimed the original trust had been “superseded.”
All false.
The Boston trust company still held the genuine agreement.
And they had something even better.
Every amendment had to be confirmed through a recorded video conference.
No such video existed.
By lunchtime, Melissa had enough to seek emergency court orders freezing Patricia’s access to every disputed account.
Patricia learned at 1:17 p.m.
At 1:24, she called Dante.
He answered.
“You froze my accounts.”
“They aren’t your accounts.”
“You’re humiliating me.”
Dante almost couldn’t believe her.
“You attacked Leo yesterday.”
“I lost my temper.”
“You stole his money.”
“I was saving Vanessa.”
“You stole Caroline’s money.”
“She’s dead!”
Silence.
Even Patricia seemed to realize how ugly it sounded.
Dante’s voice became quiet.
“Say that again.”
Patricia tried to recover.
“I meant she isn’t here to manage it.”
“No.”
Dante looked at Caroline’s letter on his desk.
“She isn’t here because she died eleven days after giving birth to my son.”
Patricia said nothing.
“And you waited until I could barely function before you started forging documents.”
“I kept this family standing.”
“You kept yourself in control.”
“I sacrificed everything for you.”
Dante laughed bitterly.
“No. You’ve been sending me an invoice for being my mother my entire life.”
Patricia went silent.
Then her voice became icy.
“You think Caroline loved you more than I did?”
Dante closed his eyes.
There it was.
The jealousy Caroline had mentioned.
“You hated her.”
“She changed you.”
“She taught me boundaries.”
“She turned you against your family.”
“No.”
Dante looked through the window toward the city.
“She was the first person who made me realize love isn’t supposed to require surrender.”
Patricia hung up.
That evening, police executed a search warrant at Harrow’s office after investigators found evidence that trust documents had been backdated.
Robert Harrow was questioned.
By midnight, he had hired his own criminal attorney.
By morning, he was negotiating.
He gave investigators emails.
Draft agreements.
Financial records.
And one audio file.
Patricia had apparently insisted on recording certain conversations because she distrusted everyone.
It was going to become her worst mistake.
The file was dated seventeen days after Caroline died.
Patricia’s voice:
“Dante is useless right now.”
Robert:
“He’s grieving.”
Patricia:
“Exactly. He’ll sign whatever I put in front of him.”
Robert:
“And if he doesn’t?”
A pause.
Then Patricia:
“Then we make sure the bank believes he did.”
Dante listened twice.
Then stopped the recording.
Michael stared at him.
“That’s enough, right?”
“For the fraud?”
Melissa nodded.
“For a lot of it.”
Dante looked toward another email investigators had found.
It referenced a meeting Patricia had held at St. Matthew Medical Center while Caroline was still alive.
Dante frowned.
“Why was Harrow meeting Mom at Caroline’s hospital?”
Melissa opened the attached invoice.
“Legal consultation regarding anticipated maternal incapacity.”
Dante stared at the date.
Caroline was alive.
Conscious.

And expected to recover.
Yet Patricia was already paying an attorney to prepare for the possibility that Caroline would lose control of Leo.
