Simon finally broke the silence.

"She slipped."

His answer came too quickly.

Too perfectly.

Mr. Miller never argued.

He simply kept examining Callie.

The swelling on her forehead.

The cracked phone beside the rug.

The overturned basket.

The scattered decorations.

Nothing matched Simon's story.

Meredith folded her arms.

"You've always raised a dramatic daughter."

Callie's fingers twitched weakly.

She tried to speak.

Only one broken word escaped.

"...Dad..."

Mr. Miller gently squeezed her hand.

"I'm here."

Simon stepped closer.

"You should leave before you make this worse."

The old man stood halfway, placing himself between Simon and Callie.
