Chapter 5 - The Recording

Nora’s phone was locked.

Thankfully, she remembered the passcode.

We didn’t play anything until her attorney arrived.

The recording was forty-three minutes long.

The first twelve were ordinary household sounds.

Then Marlene’s voice appeared.

“You’ve been checking accounts?”

Nora answered.

“Yes.”

“You should have talked to Ethan.”

“This isn’t Ethan’s money.”

Then silence.

Nora’s voice hardened.

“You took eighty-seven thousand dollars.”

Marlene laughed.

“I borrowed it.”

“You created a fake consulting company.”

“I’m family.”

“That doesn’t make it yours.”

I closed my eyes.

My mother had said that phrase my entire childhood.

I’m family.

As though family was permission.

Nora continued.

“I’m reporting the transfers.”

Marlene’s voice changed.

“You’re going to destroy Ethan’s mother over money?”

“You stole from our household.”

“I helped build his life.”

“No. You controlled it.”

The room became silent except for Nora’s hospital monitor.

Then came the sentence that explained the trust documents.

Marlene said:

“You think that Hale money makes you untouchable.”

Nora answered:

“This is about theft.”

“No. This is about you taking my son and now controlling my granddaughter too.”

I looked at Nora.

She stared at the blanket.

The recording continued.

Marlene demanded that Nora add her as successor trustee for Lily.

Nora refused.

Marlene threatened to tell me Nora was hiding money.

Nora laughed.

“Tell him everything. I will.”

Then chairs scraped.

Nora said:

“What did you put in this?”

The recording became chaotic.

A cup hit the floor.

Nora’s breathing changed.

Marlene said something too soft to understand.

Then Nora whispered:

“Get away from me.”

The recording ended.

My hands were shaking.

The attorney immediately preserved copies.

“This alone doesn’t prove exactly what happened medically,” he warned.

I understood.

But it proved my mother was there.

It proved they argued.

It proved Nora became concerned about what she had consumed.

And Marlene had taken the phone afterward.

Then Nora looked at me.

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“The bedroom camera.”

I frowned.

“The one where I found Lily?”

“No.”

Nora’s face tightened.

“The old baby monitor camera.”

She swallowed.

“I moved it downstairs three weeks ago.”

May you like

“Why?”

“Because I stopped trusting your mother.”
