Chapter 1

PART 1:
“Show him what you’re hiding.”
Doña Carmen’s voice cut through the bedroom like a blade.
The room was warm, lit by a soft lamp beside the bed, but Mariana felt cold all the way through.
She was seven months pregnant, curled on her side beneath the blanket with both hands around her belly.
Her breathing was shallow.
Her face was wet with tears.
Every muscle in her body locked when Doña Carmen stormed toward her.
Julian stood beside the bed, frozen.
He looked from his mother to his wife like he had walked into a nightmare and still did not understand who had started it.
Then Doña Carmen grabbed the edge of the blanket.
Mariana gasped.
“No—please.”
But the older woman yanked it hard.
The blanket slid off Mariana’s legs.
She cried out and clutched her belly, trying to pull the fabric back over herself.
“Julian,” she begged, her voice breaking. “Please don’t let her.”
Julian’s hands trembled.
His mother pointed at Mariana with a face full of cold certainty.
“She has been hiding in this room all day,” Doña Carmen said. “She won’t let anyone touch her. She won’t let anyone see her. Ask yourself why.”
Mariana shook her head.
“That’s not why.”
Doña Carmen turned to Julian.
“You wanted proof. Look.”
Julian swallowed hard.
Slowly, with shaking hands, he lifted the blanket just enough to see.
His face changed.
Mariana’s legs were covered in bruises.
Dark purple marks wrapped around her thighs and calves.
Some looked like fingers.
Others looked like someone had grabbed, pulled, and held too tightly.
The room went silent.
Mariana looked down at the marks.
Then she looked at Doña Carmen standing near the door.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Ask your mother.”
Doña Carmen stiffened.
Julian turned slowly.
Before he could speak, the bedroom door opened.
A female obstetrician stepped inside with a medical bag in one hand.
She had been called for what Doña Carmen described as “pregnancy drama.”
But the moment she saw Mariana’s legs, her expression changed.
She moved quickly to the bed.
“Mariana, don’t move.”
Doña Carmen lifted her chin.
“Doctor, she has been hysterical all evening.”
The doctor did not even look at her.
She examined the bruises, then checked Mariana’s belly with careful hands.
When she finally turned to Julian, her voice was cold.
“This isn’t pregnancy pain. Someone hurt her.”
Julian’s eyes went back to his mother.
Doña Carmen stepped backward.

For the first time in her life, she looked afraid.
