Chapter 6

PART 6:
Now the doctor stood beside the bed, checking Mariana’s pulse while Julian faced his mother.
“What did you do?” he asked.
Doña Carmen lifted her chin.
“I protected you.”
Julian’s voice cracked.
“From my pregnant wife?”
“From humiliation,” she snapped. “From raising another man’s child.”
Mariana flinched like the words had struck her.
The doctor looked up sharply.
Julian stared at his mother.
“There is no other man.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes,” he said, and his voice went cold. “I do.”
Doña Carmen’s confidence faltered.
Julian stepped closer.
“You knew the paperwork was genetic history. I told you about the Alvarez heart condition myself.”
Doña Carmen’s eyes shifted.
For the first time, Mariana understood.
Julian had told her the truth.
She had chosen the lie anyway.
The doctor cut in.
“She needs to go to the hospital now.”
Julian turned instantly.
“What’s wrong?”
“She’s having stress-induced contractions, and these injuries need documentation.”
Doña Carmen tried to move toward the door.
Julian blocked her.
“You’re not leaving.”
His mother’s face hardened.
“You will not speak to me like that in my son’s house.”
Julian looked at Mariana.
Then at the bruises.
Then back at his mother.
“This is my wife’s house too.”
Doña Carmen opened her mouth.
Julian’s voice rose for the first time.
“And you will never use a key to enter it again.”
At the hospital, the truth became official.
The doctor photographed the bruises for the medical record.
Security took statements.
A nurse called the police after Mariana confirmed she did not feel safe with Doña Carmen near her.
Julian sat beside the bed with his head in his hands.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Mariana watched him.
Part of her wanted to comfort him.
That part was trained by years of making everyone else’s pain more important than her own.
But she was too tired now.
Too hurt.
Too aware of the little girl moving inside her.
Finally, Julian looked up.
His eyes were red.
“I failed you.”
Mariana did not answer quickly.
The old Mariana would have said no.
Would have said it was okay.
Would have softened the truth so he could breathe easier.
May you like
This time, she said, “Yes.”
👉 But Julian’s apology was only the beginning — because Mariana needed more than words after what his silence had allowed…
