Chapter 9 - The Blank Signature
Michael hated himself for remembering.
His father had still been alive.
A family property transaction needed several emergency signatures.
Lucas placed documents in front of him.
Michael signed quickly.
One page contained an incomplete guarantee form.
“Dad will fill the figures later,” Lucas had said.
Michael trusted him.
Now that trust had become a $6 million weapon.
Sophia claimed the debt entitled her to seek repayment from Michael's shares.
Rebecca needed the original document history.
Lucas refused to provide it voluntarily.
Court orders followed.
Weeks passed.
Then forensic analysis found the flaw.
The ink.
Michael's signature was six years old.
The handwritten $6 million figure was less than one year old.
Different pen.
Different printer sequence.
Different toner.
The document had been altered long after Michael signed it.
Sophia's leverage collapsed.
But she was getting desperate.
And desperate people make mistakes.
She contacted Emily directly despite instructions that communication go through counsel.
One message:
Michael will destroy you eventually. He did exactly what I knew he'd do.
Emily stared at it.
Sophia was right about one thing.
Michael had hit her.
Emily refused to let the conspiracy erase that.
She told Michael:
“If we stay married, this changes.”
“It will.”
“No shouting at me. No hitting. Ever.”
“Never again.”
“And you don't get to say Sophia made you do it.”
“I won't.”
Emily watched him.
“Then maybe we have something to rebuild.”
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
A beginning.
Michael continued therapy.
He moved back only when Emily asked him to.
Their marriage rebuilt slowly.
Meanwhile, Mason began seeing a child therapist.
He had been carrying his own secret.
Sophia had threatened him.
“If you tell Dad what you saw, Mommy will go away.”
That was why he removed the memory card.
He didn't understand legal evidence.
He only understood that the camera told the truth.
And he wanted to protect his mother.
Michael cried when he learned that.
His seven-year-old son had shown more restraint than he had.
Then Mason remembered something else.
Sophia had taken him to Lucas's office once.
She told Michael they were getting ice cream.
At the office, Mason saw Sophia put papers into a small safe.
Investigators obtained a warrant based on broader evidence already gathered.
Inside Lucas's office safe were original drafts.
Financial spreadsheets.
The altered guarantee.
And a handwritten plan.
Phase 1: Emily credibility.
Phase 2: Michael conduct.
Phase 3: emergency control.
At the bottom:
BOARD — 51%.
The entire plan was finally visible.
But beside it was one additional name.
