Chapter 1 - The Cabinet Maisie Pointed To

“DAD!”

Ethan Carter heard his fourteen-month-old daughter scream before he understood what he was seeing.

Maisie stood beside the sofa in pale pink pajamas, her stuffed rabbit crushed against her chest.

Corinne had one hand tangled in the little girl’s hair.

The other was gripping Maisie’s upper arm.

Right over a fading bruise.

Ethan stopped cold.

Corinne released her hair immediately.

“Ethan, this isn’t—”

He crossed the room before she could finish.

He knocked Corinne’s hand away, pulled Maisie behind him, and looked down at the bruise.

His voice dropped.

“What happened to her arm?”

“She fell.”

Maisie whimpered.

Corinne reached for her.

Ethan blocked her.

“Don’t.”

“Ethan, she’s having another tantrum.”

Maisie buried her face against his leg.

Corinne tried again.

That was enough.

Ethan slapped her hard across the cheek.

Corinne stumbled sideways into the sofa.

“TOUCH HER AGAIN. JUST TRY IT.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Maisie’s tiny fingers twisted into Ethan’s shirt.

Then she whispered something that hurt him more than anything Corinne could have said.

“She said you’d abandon me, too.”

Ethan slowly looked at his wife.

Corinne’s face tightened.

“What did you tell her?”

“She’s a baby, Ethan. She doesn’t even understand—”

Maisie suddenly pointed down the hallway.

Toward a locked wooden cabinet Ethan had barely noticed since his first wife, Claire, died eleven months earlier.

“She hid Mom’s papers.”

Corinne went white.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Terrified.

Ethan saw it.

He walked toward the cabinet.

Corinne jumped in front of him.

“Leave it alone.”

“Move.”

“There’s nothing in there.”

“Then move.”

She refused.

Ethan pushed past her.

A small key was already sitting in the lock.

Corinne lunged for it.

Ethan got there first.

CLICK.

The cabinet opened.

Inside sat a thick stack of legal documents.

Some carried dates from the weeks before Claire’s death.

Others were newer.

Ethan pulled them out.

Corinne grabbed his arm.

“Don’t read that.”

He tore free.

Then opened the first document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Once.

Twice.

His breathing stopped.

The anger disappeared from his face.

So did the color.

Because whatever Claire had been preparing before she died—

Corinne had spent almost a year making sure Ethan never saw it.
