Chapter 1

PART 1:

“The problem was never me.”

Richard said it loud enough for the whole hallway to hear.

The fertility clinic went silent.

Lauren stood ten feet away from him under the cold white hospital lights, her eyes red, her coat still damp from the rain outside.

She had come alone.

Like she always did.

No mother holding her hand.

No friend sitting beside her.

No husband standing with her.

Because her husband was standing beside another woman.

His secretary.

And in her arms was a little girl with soft curls and a pink jacket.

A small boy clung to her leg, staring at Lauren like he had been told she was the villain.

Richard held a folded medical paper in one hand and the secretary’s waist with the other.

He looked proud.

Almost relieved.

Like after six years of blaming Lauren for their empty nursery, he had finally found a way to prove she was the broken one.

The secretary tilted her chin and gave Lauren a small, victorious smile.

Lauren did not cry.

She pressed both hands gently over her stomach, as if holding herself together.

Richard stepped closer.

“You made me feel guilty for years,” he said. “Years, Lauren. Doctors. Tests. Bills. Prayers. And all this time, I was perfectly fine.”

People waiting in the hallway looked down at their shoes.

A nurse froze beside the reception desk.

The secretary bounced the little girl on her hip and smiled wider.

“She deserves to know the truth,” the secretary said softly. “You deserve a real family, Richard.”

Lauren’s mouth trembled.

Not from fear.

From disbelief.

Six years of marriage had ended in a hospital hallway, in front of strangers, with two children Richard claimed were his proof.

Richard raised the paper in his hand.

“You see them?” he said, pointing toward the children. “That’s all the proof I need.”

Lauren looked at the little boy.

Then the little girl.

They were innocent.

That was the part that hurt the most.

None of this was their fault.

She lifted her eyes back to Richard.

“Are you sure?” she asked.

Richard’s smile twitched.

“What?”

Lauren’s voice stayed calm.

“Are you sure you want to do this here?”

Richard laughed once, sharp and cruel.

“You don’t get to control the story anymore.”

The secretary shifted beside him, suddenly less confident.

At the end of the hallway, the exam room door opened.

The doctor stepped out holding a thick folder.

“Mr. Hale?” he called.

Richard turned quickly.

“Perfect timing,” he said. “Doctor, please tell my wife what you told me.”

The doctor looked at Lauren.

Then at Richard.

Then at the secretary and the two children.

His expression changed.

“Mr. Hale,” the doctor said carefully, “this should be discussed in private.”

Richard smirked.

“No. She humiliated me for years with this baby obsession. She dragged me to this clinic. She told everyone we were struggling because of me. So say it here.”

Lauren blinked slowly.

Because she had never told anyone that.

May you like

Not once.

👉 But the doctor’s face changed when Lauren quietly told him to open Richard’s file in front of everyone…
