Chapter 9

PART 9:
Months later, Lauren saw Richard once.
Across a grocery store parking lot.
He looked older.
Tired.
Alone.
For a second, he stared at the child holding Lauren’s hand.
Then he looked at Lauren.
Maybe he wanted to apologize.
Maybe he wanted to explain.
Maybe he wanted one more chance to rewrite the story.
Lauren knew that look.
She had seen it too many times.
The look he wore before twisting the truth.
Before making himself the victim.
Before asking her to carry his shame one more time.
But Lauren was not that woman anymore.
Her daughter tugged her hand.
“Mom, can we get strawberries?”
The word hit Lauren softly.
Mom.
Not as an accusation.
Not as a missing title.
Not as something she had to earn through pain.
Just a word from a little girl who trusted her.
Lauren smiled.
“Of course.”
Richard took one small step forward.
Lauren saw it.
But she did not wait.
She did not ask what he wanted.
She did not give him space to explain, apologize, or perform regret.
She simply turned and walked toward the store with her daughter laughing beside her.
This time, no one stood ten feet away from her.
No one made her feel broken.
No one got to decide whether she was worthy of a family.
Richard remained behind her in the parking lot.
Smaller than she remembered.
Not because his body had changed.
Because his power over her had disappeared.
Lauren did not need revenge.
She did not need him to suffer forever.
She only needed to keep walking.
May you like
And she did.
👉 Richard wanted one more chance to rewrite the ending — but Lauren had already chosen a life where his voice no longer mattered…
