Slowly, they did learn home again.
Lily returned to school part-time.
Her teacher cried when Lily walked in, then quickly pretended she had something in her eye.
Mason started speech therapy and asked every adult, “Can I open the door if I want?”
Every time, his grandfather answered, “Yes.”
He installed soft nightlights in the hallway.
He threw away every brown medicine bottle in the house and replaced the medicine cabinet with a locked clear box.
Not because he wanted the children afraid of medicine.
Because he wanted them to see that nothing was hidden anymore.
Six months later, the court granted him permanent guardianship.
The judge asked Lily if she understood what that meant.
Lily sat up straight in her chair.
“It means we don’t have to go back.”
The judge’s eyes softened.
“Yes,” she said. “That’s exactly what it means.”
After the hearing, Lily ran into her grandfather’s arms so hard he nearly lost his balance.
Mason hugged his leg.
For a long moment, the old man could not speak.
He just held them.
The same hands that had opened the bedroom door.
The same hands that had opened the closet.
