Chapter 8: The Birthday List

Chapter 8: The Birthday List

One year later, Lily’s bedroom looked nothing like the room where he found her.

The walls were yellow now.

Her choice.

The bedspread had flowers.

Her choice.

The door stayed open most nights.

Also her choice.

On the night before her ninth birthday, her grandfather walked past and saw her sitting on the bed with a notebook in her lap.

For a second, his chest tightened.

The note.

The desperate handwriting.

The fear.

Lily looked up.

“I’m writing my birthday list,” she said.

He smiled.

“What’s on it?”

She looked down at the page.

“Chocolate cake. Roller skates. And no locked doors.”

His throat closed.

He sat beside her carefully.

“I think we can do all three.”

Lily leaned into his side.

“Grandpa?”

“Yeah, sweetheart?”

“You heard Mason.”

He nodded.

“I did.”

“And you found me.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

She looked at her open bedroom door.

Then at the soft hallway light.

Then she whispered, “I knew you would.”

The old man put his arm around her and kissed the top of her messy hair.

Outside, the house was quiet.

Not the cold quiet of fear.

The warm quiet of children finally sleeping without needing to fight their way back awake.

The foster parents had believed sleeping medicine could hide everything.

But they forgot one thing.

Children tell the truth in any way they can.

A note.

A whisper.

A knock from inside a closet.

And sometimes, all it takes is one person who refuses to ignore it.

💬 What was the most heartbreaking moment — Lily whispering that she felt hot, or Grandpa hearing Mason knocking from inside the closet?
