PART 3

Vanessa stepped closer.
“She’s confused. She fell earlier. I was trying to help her.”
My mother flinched at the sound of Vanessa’s voice.
That told me more than any answer could have.
I turned back slowly.
“Don’t come near her.”
Vanessa stopped.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked afraid of me.
Good.
My name is Staff Sergeant Ethan Miller, United States Army.
I had spent eight months overseas training allied forces and keeping younger soldiers alive long enough to hate my advice.
But before I was a soldier, I was Grace Miller’s son.
She raised me alone after my father died in a factory accident outside Columbus, Ohio.
She worked double shifts at a school cafeteria.
She hemmed my pants by hand.
She pretended she liked canned soup because it meant I could have the last piece of chicken.
That house was not just wood and brick.
It was her knees after sixteen-hour days.
It was my father’s old toolbox in the garage.
It was every birthday cake she baked at midnight because she still wanted me to wake up to candles.
And now my wife was trying to steal it from under her.
I helped my mother sit against the bed.
She gripped my sleeve like I might disappear again.
“I didn’t want to tell you,” she whispered. “You were so far away.”
May you like
My throat tightened.
“Tell me now.”
