PART 7

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

There she was.

The real Vanessa.

Not the loving wife.

Not the worried daughter-in-law.

The woman who could slap an old lady and still feel wronged when someone noticed.

“I waited for you,” she snapped. “Do you know what that was like? Alone in this dead little house with your sick mother breathing down my neck?”

“My mother gave you a room when your lease fell apart.”

“She controlled everything.”

“She cooked for you.”

“She watched me like I was stealing.”

“You were.”

The words landed hard.

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You think the Army makes you noble? You left me here.”

“My direct deposit paid every bill in this house.”

“That’s not the point.”

“No,” I said. “The point is you thought my mother was weak because she was kind.”

Vanessa looked toward the officers.

“He’s threatening me.”

One deputy, a woman named Harris, didn’t blink.

“Ma’am, he hasn’t moved.”

Vanessa’s tears stopped.

That was the thing about people like her.

They know exactly when an audience is no longer buying tickets.

Deputy Harris turned to me.

“Staff Sergeant Miller, we’ll need copies of all recordings.”

“You’ll have them.”

My mother reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I knelt beside her.

“For what?”

“For not telling you sooner.”

May you like

I squeezed her fingers carefully.

“You survived until I got home. That’s all you had to do.”
