Chapter 1 - UNDER THE TABLE

I heard Maisie crying before I saw her.
The sound was so faint beneath the wedding music and champagne chatter that I almost walked past the banquet table. Then I stopped, crouched, and ripped the long white tablecloth upward.
My fourteen-month-old daughter sat alone beneath it.
Her pale-pink party dress was wrinkled. Tears streaked both cheeks. One white shoe had partly slipped off. She held a small piece of birthday cake in both hands as if it were the only thing anyone had allowed her to keep.
“MOMMY… DON’T LET HER SEE ME.”
My entire body went still.
I got Maisie out immediately and put her safely behind me. Then I saw Graham standing beside the towering wedding cake with Vanessa in her white gown.
My ex-husband.
His new bride.
I crossed the marble floor before I could talk myself out of what my body already knew.
Graham turned.
I slapped him.
Hard.
“YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?”
His head snapped sideways.
The ballroom fell silent.
Vanessa stepped between us, fury flashing across her face.
“DON’T TOUCH MY HUSBAND!”
She reached for me.
I knocked her hand aside and slapped her too.
Vanessa staggered into the banquet table. Champagne glasses rattled violently. Guests gasped. Graham stared at me like he had never seen me before.
Then Maisie pressed herself against the back of my pale-blue dress.
Vanessa’s eyes found her.
“YOU SHOULD’VE STAYED HIDDEN.”
Every instinct in me sharpened.
Maisie went strangely still.
Her tiny hand moved toward the pocket sewn into her dress.
Vanessa saw it.
And the anger vanished from her face.
Maisie pulled out a small black voice recorder.
Its red light blinked.
Vanessa lunged.
I caught her wrist before she reached my child.
Maisie raised the recorder with both hands.
“I RECORDED ALL YOUR SECRETS.”
Vanessa went deathly pale.
Graham slowly lowered his hand from his reddened cheek.
I took the recorder from Maisie and tucked her against my side.
“What’s on this?”
Vanessa said nothing.
That silence frightened me more than anything she could have shouted.
Graham looked from the recorder to his new wife.
“Vanessa?”
She swallowed.
I pressed play.
Static crackled from the tiny speaker.
Then Vanessa’s voice filled the ballroom.
“Make sure Naomi comes through the west doors. I need the cameras on her when she loses control.”
The recording stopped.
My stomach dropped.
Graham stared at me.
I stared at Vanessa.
Guests began whispering.
I looked at the wedding videographer positioned near the dance floor.
His camera was pointed directly at us.
And suddenly my two slaps felt less like an explosion Vanessa had feared—
May you like
and more like an explosion she had been waiting for.
📖 I came to the wedding searching for my daughter, but the first recording made me realize Vanessa had been preparing for my anger long before I entered the ballroom. 👇
