Chapter 2 - THE LOCKED DRAWER

“Take Noah upstairs,” Ryan said.

I stared at him.

Not What happened?

Not Is he hurt?

Take Noah upstairs.

“No.”

Diane climbed out of the overturned laundry basket.

“She’s hysterical, Ryan.”

I turned toward her.

“Say another word about me while my son is shaking because of you.”

Diane closed her mouth.

Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.

“Emma, please.”

“Did you know?”

His hesitation lasted perhaps two seconds.

It was enough.

“Not like this.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“I knew Mom was disciplining him.”

“Disciplining a fourteen-month-old?”

“I didn't know about the leash.”

Diane snapped, “Don't be ridiculous. It's a safety harness.”

Ryan looked at her sharply.

That reaction told me something.

He knew about something.

Maybe not everything.

I picked up the harness with my free hand.

Noah whimpered.

I immediately dropped it again.

His reaction was instinctive.

Fear attached to an object.

I carried him upstairs.

Ryan followed.

Diane tried.

I turned at the staircase.

“You stay downstairs.”

“This is my son’s house.”

“It is Noah’s home.”

She stopped.

For once, Ryan backed me.

“Mom. Stay there.”

In Noah’s room, I checked every inch of him.

There was redness where the harness had pressed against his clothes and a faint bruise on his arm.

I photographed both.

Then I called his pediatrician.

Ryan watched from the doorway.

“You're calling Dr. Levin?”

“Yes.”

“Emma, maybe we should figure out what happened first.”

“I know what happened.”

“You saw ten seconds.”

“I saw enough.”

His face changed.

“You think I would let someone hurt him?”

I looked directly at him.

“I don't know what you let happen.”

That landed.

While I packed Noah’s diaper bag, I noticed his dresser drawer was locked.

It had never been locked before.

“Ryan.”

He looked.

“Why is that locked?”

“I don't know.”

Diane had been helping with laundry while I worked afternoon shifts at the design studio.

She regularly put Noah’s clothes away.

I found the spare dresser key in the closet.

Ryan said, “Emma, don't.”

I turned.

“Why?”

He had no answer.

I opened it.

Inside were three things.

A second fabric harness.

Another metal leash.

And a notebook.

My hands went cold.

The first page contained dates.

Beside each date were short handwritten notes.

Cried during lunch.

Refused food.

Threw cup.

Wouldn't stay seated.

Then punishments.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

No snacks.

Laundry room.

The handwriting was Diane’s.

Ryan stepped behind me.

“Oh, God.”

I flipped backward.

The entries covered twenty-three days.

Then I found one line written in different handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

Ryan’s.

MOM—THIS IS TOO MUCH. EMMA CAN NEVER SEE THIS.

I slowly turned toward my husband.

He had not merely known something.

May you like

He had written instructions about keeping it from me.

📖 Ryan could no longer deny helping hide Diane’s “discipline,” but his explanation would reveal that the secret began with a decision I had unknowingly approved. 👇
