My phone connection remained open on the car speaker.
I listened to the sound of his house shattering.
"Vanessa is gone, Daniel," I said softly to.
"And your position at the company ends at four."
Daniel gasped, clutching the phone receiver with both hands.
"What do you mean about my corporate position, Claire?"
"My father owned fifty-one percent of your firm's stock."
"Evelyn called an emergency board meeting twenty minutes ago."
"The board voted unanimously to terminate your executive contract."
"You are no longer the chief executive officer today."
Daniel let out a pathetic, high-pitched sob of horror.
