Chapter 19 - The House With No Safe Room

The attack on Mom came from inside the protection detail.

Two federal agents assigned by Judge Reed drew their weapons in the underground garage. Ruiz shot one in the leg. Cross struck the other with her handcuffed wrists before he could fire.

Mom did not run.

She pulled Ryan behind a concrete support pillar and used the broken arm of her glasses to open an emergency electrical panel.

The garage went black.

By the time we reached them, Ruiz had both traitors restrained, Cross had blood on her forehead, and Mom stood beside Ryan with the surviving lens in her hand.

“You could have been killed,” I said.

Mom looked at me with exhausted eyes. “That sentence has lost some of its power this week.”

Ryan sat on the floor, pressing his good hand over his wound.

He would not look at her.

The bat in the kitchen had not disappeared simply because a larger enemy existed. Neither had the bruises on her face.

Mom knelt in front of him.

“You raised that bat.”

Ryan’s jaw trembled.

“You used me.”

“I did.”

“You knew I would come.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was angry.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t know I would hit you.”

“No.”

That answer broke something in him.

Ryan covered his face.

“I wanted the ledger. I thought if I gave it to Shaw, he’d erase the debts and get me out. Then you told me Dad was alive and everything I had done for four years felt like another lie.”

Mom did not touch him.

Pain did not erase accountability.

“I will testify against you,” she said.

Ryan lowered his hands.

“I know.”

“But I will also tell the truth about how Gray Lantern recruited you, threatened you, and used your debts.”

“Why?”

“Because you are my son. And because loving you does not require me to lie for you.”

Across the garage, Cross watched them in silence.

Lena stood under guard wearing borrowed clothes, her false face partially removed. Without the prosthetic structure, she looked younger than me. Frightened, too.

She gave us Reed’s destination: a private airfield outside Frederick.

He planned to leave the country after releasing a final archive that would destroy every witness’s credibility and frame me as Gray Lantern’s operational commander.

Bell secured a helicopter.

Before we boarded, Dad approached Mom.

He said her name like a confession.

“Nancy.”

She looked at him.

“I am not forgiving you tonight, Thomas.”

“I know.”

“You watched our son hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You let our daughter bury you.”

His eyes dropped.

“I know.”

Mom stepped past him.

“Then stay alive long enough to earn whatever comes next.”

May you like

The helicopter lifted toward Frederick.

Below us, Reed’s aircraft had already begun moving toward the runway.
