Chapter 10 - THE EXPERIMENT

The largest lie was older than my marriage.
That was the part I had not expected.
Martin Brooks had served as hospital administrator when Helen Blackwood was undergoing treatment.
He had also overseen research-compliance committees connected to Mercer’s foundation.
Years later, he referred his own son to Mercer.
Same doctor.
Same network.
Same data culture.
Different families.
When Claire’s team obtained old foundation minutes through Martin’s attorney, a project name appeared repeatedly.
COMPATIBILITY OUTCOMES INITIATIVE.
Not an approved clinical trial.
A proposed research framework.
Mercer wanted to compare outcomes when donor sperm was selected using expanded maternal family-health data.
The board rejected clinical implementation.
At least officially.
But Mercer kept building profiles.
One was labeled:
CARTER-F.
My mother’s maiden family line.
Another:
BLACKWOOD-H.
Helen’s.
Another:
BROOKS-J.
Julian’s.
I stared at the documents.
“He built reproductive matching files like people were inventory.”
The reproductive attorney nodded grimly.
“Conceptually, yes.”
“Did he actually use them?”
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”
Then came the ultimate twist.
An archived Mercer spreadsheet.
Donor 4187.
Target recipient:
Emma Carter.
Primary source:
J. Brooks.
Secondary source:
G. Blackwood.
Selection rationale:
Complementary carrier profiles; phenotypic alignment; familial cardiac-risk mitigation.
My hands went numb.
This had not been an accident.
Not a clerical error.
Not Chloe changing a vial.
Not Julian secretly arranging to father my children.
Adrian Mercer had created donor 4187 specifically around me.
Using two men’s stored sperm.
Without my knowledge.
Without their valid consent.
Years before I entered Queen City.
He had treated our reproductive lives like unfinished research.
Julian stood up from the conference table.
“I’m going to kill him.”
His attorney grabbed his sleeve.
“Sit down.”
He did.
Barely.
Garrison did not move.
That was somehow more frightening.
I stared at the spreadsheet.
“Why would Queen City accept this?”
The answer came from another email.
Mercer had represented donor 4187 as a legacy anonymous donor with unusually complete health screening.
Queen City had not known the two source lots came from different men.
At least not according to the documents produced so far.
Dr. Hale’s account had been used to approve the consolidation email.
Forensic review later showed the login occurred from an IP address associated with Mercer’s office.
Not Dr. Hale.
He had likely impersonated her.
The clinic had been negligent.
Mercer had been deliberate.
And Chloe?
Her role looked smaller and uglier in a different way.
She discovered the irregularity later.
She hid it because exposing the donor-number problem would reveal her inappropriate access to Julian’s file and their affair.
She did not create the scheme.
She protected it once she found it.
Julian did the same.
Again, not mastermind.
Coward.
That distinction mattered.
I looked at him.
“You knew your sample might have been used.”
“Yes.”
“But you didn’t know Garrison’s was there too.”
“No.”
Garrison spoke quietly.
“Neither did I.”
The spreadsheet listed two source lots.
One insemination cycle.
Two vials.
One from each source.
My twins could theoretically have different biological fathers.
The room went silent.
I placed both hands over my stomach.
Until that moment, everybody had been staring at the pregnancy like a legal puzzle.
I felt one baby kick.
Then the other.
Two separate movements.
For the first time, the possibility stopped being abstract.
Julian may be the biological father of one child.
Garrison may be the biological father of the other.
Or one man may be father to both.
We would not know until after delivery.
Then Claire turned the spreadsheet over.
“There’s a handwritten notation.”
I looked.
Mercer’s initials.
A date.
And one sentence:
Recipient unaware. M.B. requests observation only, no disclosure until successful live birth.
M.B.
Martin Brooks.
Julian’s father.
Julian read it.
Then looked at his father across the room.
“You asked him to watch her pregnancy?”
May you like
Martin’s face went gray.
And this time he had no denial ready.
