His mouth twisted.

“Your mother was weak.”

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

I took one step toward him.

“She survived you.”

He flinched.

Maybe it was the uniform.

Maybe it was the witnesses.

Maybe it was because, for the first time, his money could not protect him from the truth.

Then security entered.

Two guards stepped inside.

My father looked outraged.

“You’re removing me?”

Callahan’s expression did not change.

“I’m protecting my client.”

My father laughed bitterly.

“Your client? I’ve paid this firm for years.”

Callahan looked at me.

“My client is Lieutenant Morgan.”

That sentence broke something in him.

He pointed at Eric.

“Tell them this is wrong.”

Eric looked at the red mark on my cheek.

Then he said quietly,

“You hit her.”

My father snapped,

“She disrespected me.”

Eric shook his head.

“No. You just finally did it where everyone could see.”

My father grabbed his coat with shaking hands.

Before he left, he turned to me.

“You think this makes you powerful?”

“No,” I said. “It makes me free.”
