Chapter 13 - THE CHILD BORN UNDER GUARD

My daughter was born at 3:42 a.m.

She weighed two pounds, one ounce.

She did not cry.

Doctors carried her directly to the neonatal team.

I saw only one tiny hand before the surgical curtain blocked my view.

“Is she alive?”

No one answered immediately.

Then a nurse said,

“She has a heartbeat.”

I woke several hours later in a guarded recovery room.

My father sat near the window.

My mother stood outside the glass.

She had not entered.

Agent Ross waited beside the door.

“My baby?”

“Stable in intensive care.”

I began crying.

Ross waited until I could breathe.

Then he showed me the morgue photograph.

The man listed as Dr. Leonard had matching fingerprints.

But dental records belonged to another physician named Paul Mercer.

Plastic surgery had altered his face.

The real Samuel Leonard remained alive.

“He replaced himself years ago,” Ross said.

“Where is he?”

“We believe he is Kane’s medical director.”

My father stared at the photograph.

“Leonard would never work beneath Kane.”

Ross looked at him.

“Then who works beneath whom?”

Silence.

Kane may not have led the conspiracy.

Leonard might have controlled Kane.

The public evidence triggered immediate arrests.

Two senators.

A federal judge.

Three military contractors.

Four intelligence officials.

But every file related to the biological encryption program contained a deletion command.

Someone activated it minutes after the broadcast.

The data remained public, but the names of children created through the program began disappearing.

Including my daughter’s medical identity.

Her hospital record changed while she lay inside the NICU.

Name: Unknown Female.

Mother: Unknown.

The system no longer recognized me as her parent.

Ross locked down the hospital network.

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Reed, there’s a problem.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“Someone attempted to transfer your baby.”

“To where?”

“Another hospital.”

“Who authorized it?”

She handed Ross the digital order.

It carried my father’s medical signature.

He looked at it.

“I did not sign this.”

The destination was a private neonatal facility in Virginia.

Carter Biomedical Center.

My mother saw the name through the glass and entered without permission.

“That facility burned twenty years ago.”

Ross shook his head.

“It reopened under a defense contract.”

The NICU alarm sounded.

We ran into the corridor.

Two nurses stood beside an empty incubator.

My daughter was gone.

Security footage showed a neonatal transport team leaving four minutes earlier.

The vehicle had valid federal credentials.

Ross called every checkpoint.

My mother gripped the wall.

“Leonard took her.”

I turned toward her.

“How do you know?”

She closed her eyes.

“Because Carter Biomedical is where he created Emily.”

My father stared at her.

“What did you say?”

She looked at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

“You were not born in an ordinary hospital.”

My incision burned as I stepped closer.

“What else did you hide?”

May you like

She whispered,

“You were the first child who survived the program.”
