Chapter 11 - THE FIRST MARRIAGE

Federal investigators searched marriage records under my maiden name.

Nothing appeared.

Then Nathan found a sealed county file.

Sarah Bennett and Daniel Cross.

Married eleven years earlier.

The ceremony occurred three days before Daniel’s supposed death.

Witness: Dr. Evelyn Cross.

My signature looked real.

I remembered none of it.

I confronted Daniel after surgery.

He survived the bullet.

Barely.

“Why don’t I remember marrying you?”

His face filled with shame.

“Your car was hit the same night as mine.”

“My car?”

“You were following me.”

I remembered waking in a hospital after what my parents called a minor accident.

Headaches.

Missing days.

Jason visiting with flowers.

He said he was Daniel’s friend.

He helped me grieve.

Daniel continued.

“Mother altered your medical records. She told doctors you had memory loss from the crash.”

“Did she cause it?”

“I don’t know.”

Nathan placed another file on the table.

Dr. Cross authorized an experimental sedative during my hospitalization.

The same drug later found in missing women beneath the workshop.

She had erased my memory deliberately.

Jason did not happen to meet me after Daniel’s death.

She assigned him to monitor me.

He became my friend.

Then my boyfriend.

Then my husband.

But if my marriage to Daniel remained legally valid, my marriage to Jason was void.

Jason had never been my lawful husband.

The realization should have felt freeing.

Instead, it made every year with him feel more stolen.

Daniel looked at me.

“I wanted to come back.”

“You were alive for eleven years.”

“I was imprisoned for most of them.”

“And after you escaped?”

“I needed evidence before I reached you.”

“You left me with him.”

His eyes filled with pain.

“Yes.”

I stood.

“I need time.”

Outside his room, Nathan waited.

“Do you believe him?” I asked.

“I believe he was tortured.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Nathan looked through the window at his brother.

“I believe he made choices while afraid.”

“So did I.”

The children rescued from the workshop entered protective care.

Lily refused to leave without me.

She stayed in the hospital family unit while social workers searched for relatives.

Megan delivered a healthy boy two days later.

The baby in the incubator was identified through DNA.

Her grandmother had spent six months believing both mother and child were dead.

They were reunited.

Every rescue created another question.

How many other facilities existed?

How many women disappeared?

How many children had false names?

Michael’s recording became central evidence.

Tyler agreed to testify against Jason and Dr. Cross.

Chief Cole survived the gunshot and confessed to covering up three deaths.

Jason refused to speak.

Until investigators told him my first marriage was valid.

Then he laughed.

“Daniel still hasn’t told her the worst part.”

I entered the interrogation room.

“What part?”

Jason leaned toward the glass.

“You were pregnant when Daniel died.”

My hand moved toward my belly.

“No.”

“You lost the baby after the crash.”

May you like

He smiled.

“Ask Daniel where that child is buried.”
