Chapter 10 - The Baby They Said I Lost

I did not tell Russell what the message had done to me.

I did not give him the satisfaction.

Instead, I handed my phone to Sarah and asked Judge Leonard to keep the screen from Welch’s view.

The judge read the threat.

His expression shifted from anger to something colder.

“Ms. Davenport,” he said carefully, “do you understand the reference?”

“Yes.”

The word barely came out.

I told the court about the pregnancy.

I had been fourteen weeks along when Russell pushed me during an argument at our old house. I remembered striking the stairs. I remembered blood. I remembered waking in a private clinic with Russell beside me.

He said the baby was gone.

The physician, Dr. Nathan Bell, told me surgery had been necessary and that stress could interfere with memory.

I never saw an ultrasound afterward.

I never received hospital discharge records.

Russell handled everything.

Sarah closed her eyes for one second.

“You never told me.”

“I couldn’t prove it.”

Russell stood.

“This is monstrous.”

Judge Leonard turned toward him.

“Sit down.”

“She fell. I took her for treatment. Now she is using a miscarriage to suggest I stole a child?”

“I didn’t suggest anything,” I said. “The person who sent that message did.”

Welch demanded to inspect the phone.

Judge Leonard refused.

Police traced the number to a disposable device purchased two days earlier at a pharmacy in Manchester. The store’s camera showed Dean Mercer buying it.

Dean was now officially wanted for questioning.

A tactical team located Dr. Price’s sedan abandoned near a river access road. The passenger door was open. Toby’s other sneaker lay on the gravel.

There was no blood.

No sign of struggle.

Only two sets of adult footprints and one set of small sock prints leading toward the water.

My knees buckled.

Sarah held me upright.

A search boat launched as daylight faded.

Twenty minutes later, an officer found Toby’s navy shirt caught on a low branch downstream.

Inside the shirt, written beneath the original lines in fresh ink, were four more words:

MOM, DON’T BELIEVE THE RIVER.

I pressed the wet fabric against my face.

He was alive when he wrote it.

He was thinking.

He was leaving me a trail.

Investigators returned to the abandoned sedan. This time, they searched beneath the seats and inside the air vents.

They found a parking stub from St. Catherine’s Private Medical Center.

The same clinic where I had been taken after my fall.

The stub was dated three days earlier.

Security footage from the clinic showed Caroline entering with Dr. Price.

She carried a folder labeled BRENDA DAVENPORT—MATERNITY.

Then she looked directly at the camera and mouthed two words.

Not dead.

📖 Toby’s warning proved the river was staged, while Caroline’s message from the clinic suggested the child I mourned might never have died. 👇
