Chapter 1 - The Camera Above the Kennel

“GET IN THERE. THAT’S WHERE YOU BELONG.”

I heard Margaret before I saw her.

Then I stepped through the glass doors—and my blood went cold.

My five-year-old daughter was on the stone patio beside the dog kennel.

A long chain was clipped to the sturdy belt over Sophie’s purple dress.

Margaret had one hand on the kennel door.

Sophie was crying behind the wooden bars.

“SOPHIE!”

I ran.

I threw open the kennel, unclipped the chain, and pulled my daughter against me.

Her entire body was shaking.

“What did you do to her?”

Margaret didn't even look ashamed.

Instead, she straightened her pearl necklace.

“Your husband knows.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He’s never stopped me.”

For one terrible second, I couldn't process the words.

My husband, Daniel?

Sophie’s father?

Margaret reached toward Sophie again.

I knocked her hand away.

“DON’T YOU EVER TOUCH MY CHILD AGAIN.”

Margaret stumbled backward.

I pulled Sophie behind me.

Then I felt her tiny fingers tugging my blouse.

“Mommy…”

I turned.

Sophie was pointing above Margaret.

At the security camera mounted beneath the eaves.

Its red indicator light blinked steadily.

Sophie whispered:

“She didn't do it alone.”

Margaret’s face changed.

Instantly.

The arrogance vanished.

She looked at the camera.

Then at the chain.

Then at me.

And took one involuntary step backward.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because Margaret hadn't been afraid when I caught her abusing Sophie.

She became afraid only when she realized the camera might have recorded who helped her.

I carried Sophie inside and locked the door.

Margaret pounded once against the glass.

I didn't open it.

My hands were shaking as I called Daniel.

Straight to voicemail.

I called again.

Nothing.

Sophie buried her face against my neck.

“Honey, who else was here?”

She immediately stiffened.

I stopped.

I wasn't going to frighten an answer out of a five-year-old.

“You don't have to tell me right now.”

Then Sophie whispered something on her own.

“Grandma says Daddy wants me fixed.”

I felt sick.

“Fixed how?”

She wouldn't answer.

That evening, my sister Claire came and stayed with Sophie while I photographed the kennel, chain, belt, and patio exactly as I had found them.

Then I noticed something.

The security camera wasn't part of our regular home system.

It looked identical.

But the serial sticker underneath was different.

Someone had replaced it.

I checked the home-security app.

The backyard camera showed OFFLINE.

It claimed it had been offline for seventeen days.

Yet I had just watched its red light blinking.

That meant the camera above the kennel wasn't feeding footage to our account.

Someone else had installed it.

Someone else might have been watching my backyard.

Then Daniel finally called.

“Rachel, what's going on?”

I could barely control my voice.

“Your mother chained Sophie to the dog kennel.”

Silence.

Not:

What?

Not:

Is Sophie okay?

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“Did you touch the camera?”

Every hair on my arms rose.

I hadn't mentioned the camera.

“Daniel…”

Another silence.

May you like

“How did you know there was a camera?”

He hung up.
