I thought the laboratory had made a mistake.
Mark was the only man I had been with.
Dr. Grant repeated the test.
Same result.
The pregnancy was mine.
The father was unknown.
Then Claire remembered something.
Eight weeks earlier, Diane had taken me to a clinic after I fainted during dinner.
Mark said I was dehydrated.
I woke hours later with cramps and a bandage near my hip.
They told me doctors removed an ovarian cyst.
No hospital record existed.
Price admitted the truth.
Diane arranged an embryo transfer while I was sedated.

“Why?” I asked him.

Mark agreed to raise the child publicly as his own.

Owen located Bell’s former attorney, Evelyn Shaw.
She confirmed Bell had deposited reproductive material before cancer treatment.
He later ordered it destroyed.
The clinic falsely claimed compliance.
Diane purchased the samples through an illegal broker.
My pregnancy was evidence of fertility fraud, assault, and an inheritance conspiracy.
I pressed both hands to my stomach.
The baby moved.
None of their plans changed the fact that she was alive.

Innocent.
Dr. Grant asked whether I wanted information about ending the pregnancy.
I shook my head.
“I want her protected.”
The decision was mine for the first time.
Evelyn Shaw agreed to help challenge any inheritance claim and place Bell’s disputed assets into a court-supervised trust if the baby was legally recognized.
She also brought a sealed letter written by Thomas Bell before his death.
He feared his samples had been stolen.
He requested that any child conceived without consent never be treated as evidence of wrongdoing.
The child, he wrote, should inherit dignity before money.
I cried while reading it.
A dead stranger showed my daughter more humanity than the family around me.
Mark requested to speak with me from jail.
I refused.

Price immediately contradicted him.
