Chapter 7 - THE SECOND FIRE

Jonathan pressed the trigger.

Flames erupted near the stairwell.

Smoke rolled across the ceiling.

Lena fired.

He disappeared behind a concrete column.

Agents moved us toward the maintenance exit.

Michael came from the side corridor and grabbed me around the waist.

I screamed.

He dragged me behind the nursery wall.

Ashley struck him with a metal file tray.

He released me and shoved her into a crib.

Sarah rushed toward the archive carrying the yellow blanket.

Katherine tackled her.

The two women crashed onto the floor.

Sarah clawed at my mother’s wounded shoulder.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Katherine drove her knee into Sarah’s stomach.

“You first.”

Daniel Price pulled the fire suppression lever.

Nothing happened.

The system had been disabled.

Agent Sloan called for emergency crews.

Jonathan fired from the lower corridor.

One agent fell.

Lena returned fire.

Glass shattered around the old nursery.

I crawled toward Ashley.

She was conscious but bleeding from the forehead.

Michael seized the H-17 file.

I grabbed the other side.

He pulled.

“Let go.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand what she is.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“She’s a contract.”

The sentence erased whatever remained of our marriage.

I released the file suddenly.

He stumbled backward.

I drove both hands into his chest.

He crashed against a crib.

Daniel grabbed him from behind.

They fought near the furnace.

Sarah broke free from Katherine and ran with the blanket.

My mother shouted.

“The evidence!”

I chased Sarah despite the pain in my abdomen.

She reached the furnace door.

I caught her cardigan and pulled.

The fabric tore.

She spun and slapped me across the bruised face.

My vision flashed white.

Then she raised the blanket over the flames.

Ashley threw the small white bottle from the bathroom evidence bag.

She had taken it from the command vehicle after police recovered it again.

The bottle struck Sarah’s wrist.

She dropped the blanket away from the furnace.

The cap broke.

Adhesive-sedative liquid spilled across Sarah’s hand.

Her fingers stiffened almost immediately.

She screamed.

The chemical she planned to use on me immobilized her grip.

Katherine grabbed the blanket.

The building shook.

A ceiling panel collapsed.

Fire spread through the archive.

Agent Sloan shouted for evacuation.

Daniel and Michael continued fighting.

Jonathan emerged with the remote.

“Michael!”

His son turned.

Jonathan threw him a gun.

Michael caught it.

For one second, he aimed at Daniel.

Then at me.

His hand shook.

“Come with me.”

I stared at him.

“You tried to steal my baby.”

“My father said we would all be protected.”

“Protected from what?”

“Losing everything.”

The trust.

The company.

The family name.

He had always confused possession with survival.

Jonathan shouted again.

“Shoot her!”

Michael looked at his father.

Something broke across his face.

Not goodness.

Recognition.

Jonathan never intended to save him.

Only the inheritance plan.

Only the evidence.

Only himself.

Michael lowered the gun slightly.

Jonathan aimed at him.

“You were always weak.”

He fired.

Sarah stepped between them.

The bullet struck her side.

She fell.

Michael screamed and shot toward Jonathan.

The bullet missed.

Lena returned fire.

Jonathan dropped behind the furnace.

The remote slid across the floor.

I kicked it toward Agent Sloan.

She disabled the ignition circuit.

The gasoline continued flowing, but the main explosive charges stopped.

Firefighters entered through the upper level.

Daniel dragged Michael away from the flames.

Katherine and Ashley supported me.

Sarah lay near the nursery door.

She looked up at Michael.

“My boy.”

He knelt beside her.

She touched his face with her stiffened hand.

“You were supposed to finish it.”

Even dying, she gave him a command.

Michael stared at her.

Then at me.

Police moved toward him.

He stood and raised the gun.

Everyone froze.

He could shoot me.

An officer.

Himself.

Instead, he pointed toward the lower corridor.

“My father went that way.”

Then he dropped the weapon.

Jonathan escaped through a tunnel beneath the clinic.

Sarah survived surgery.

Michael was arrested.

Daniel provided the copied camera files.

The bathroom recording showed everything.

Michael’s shove.

Sarah’s bottle.

My code.

Their panic.

The entire planned assault.

But the H-17 file was partially burned.

The donor signature could not be authenticated.

Jonathan’s involvement remained legally uncertain.

Claire Holloway claimed the file was fabricated.

Judge Sloan issued statements denying knowledge.

The fire destroyed much of the nursery archive.

We saved the yellow blanket and microfilm.

Not enough.

Maya warned us.

“Their network will argue Michael and Sarah acted alone.”

“What about my mother?”

“They’ll say she is a traumatized former patient.”

“What about Daniel?”

“A paid contractor with a criminal trespass history.”

“What about me?”

“They’ll say you discovered the trust and invented a conspiracy.”

The truth existed.

But truth without organized evidence could still lose.

Then Katherine opened the blanket seam again.

Behind the microfilm was a second strip.

A handwritten sequence of numbers.

Bank accounts.

Facility codes.

And one address.

A property in Vermont registered to Jonathan Carter.

Agent Sloan searched it.

They found no Jonathan.

They found twelve pregnant women.

All locked inside private rooms.

One was scheduled to give birth the next morning.

Her medical guardian was Judge Philip Sloan.
