Chapter 3 - THE MAN ABOVE US

The voice came through the ceiling speaker with calm authority.

“Put down the knife.”

Laura pressed the blade harder against Daniel’s throat.

A thin line of blood appeared.

“Open the cage, Victor.”

Victor Carter laughed softly.

“You still believe commands work both ways.”

My mother’s face changed.

Not fear alone.

Recognition of an old nightmare.

The gas thickened around me.

My breathing became shallow.

I pulled the towel over my nose and mouth, but the chemical taste reached my tongue.

Sarah attacked the keypad.

The screen demanded an eight-digit override.

She entered maintenance codes.

Rejected.

She tried again.

Rejected.

Daniel looked at me.

“Sign the documents, and he stops the gas.”

“There are no documents in here.”

He pointed toward a narrow slot in the enclosure wall.

A sealed folder slid through from an internal compartment.

Everything had been prepared.

A pen.

Guardianship consent.

Trust transfer.

Medical release.

Temporary custody authorization for my unborn child.

I stared at the signature lines.

The cage was not only a prison.

It was a signing room.

Victor spoke again.

“Emily, your mother created this problem fourteen years ago. You can end it in thirty seconds.”

Laura shouted toward the ceiling.

“You murdered her father.”

“He tried to steal company assets.”

“They belonged to him.”

“They belonged to the work.”

Victor always spoke as if ownership were moral.

As if wealth transformed violence into policy.

I picked up the pen.

Laura looked at me.

“No.”

The baby had not moved again.

My vision blurred.

“I need the gas off.”

“If you sign, they still kill you.”

Daniel said, “She’s lying.”

I looked at him.

“Will you let me out?”

“Yes.”

“Will you take me to a hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Will I keep my baby?”

A pause.

Small.

Fatal.

Laura saw it.

So did I.

He had never intended to leave the baby with me.

I placed the pen down.

Daniel’s calm shattered.

“Sign it!”

I looked toward Sarah.

She was examining the base of the keypad.

“There’s a manual release behind the panel.”

Daniel moved toward her.

Laura tightened the knife.

“Stay.”

He stopped.

Sarah pulled a screwdriver from the cleaning cart and removed two screws.

A bundle of wires appeared.

She traced them with her fingers.

“Blue should release the magnetic lock.”

Victor spoke through the speaker.

“Sarah, your son attends Franklin Middle School.”

She froze.

The screwdriver slipped in her hand.

Victor continued.

“Seventh grade. Soccer team. Walks home on Tuesdays.”

Sarah’s face lost color.

Daniel smiled.

“Step away.”

She closed her eyes.

For one second, I thought she would obey.

Then she ripped the blue wire free.

The glass door released with a heavy click.

I threw my body against it.

It opened.

Daniel drove backward into Laura, knocking the knife from her hand.

He swung the prod toward Sarah.

She raised the cleaning cart.

The metal frame caught the strike.

Electricity snapped through the handle.

Sarah screamed and collapsed.

I crawled through the opening.

My knees struck concrete.

The towel loosened.

I held it against my chest and dragged myself toward Sarah.

Daniel grabbed my ankle.

I kicked wildly.

He pulled me backward.

My belly struck the floor.

Pain exploded through my abdomen.

I screamed.

Laura attacked him.

She drove her shoulder into his ribs.

He released me.

The basement shutters shook as agents tried to breach them.

Victor’s voice grew sharper.

“Daniel, bring her upstairs.”

Daniel seized the back of my towel and hauled me toward the staircase.

Laura grabbed his arm.

He struck her with the prod.

Blue light flashed.

She collapsed against the wall.

“Mom!”

Daniel dragged me harder.

Sarah stirred on the floor.

Her fingers moved toward the hidden phone.

The screen still showed one unsent file.

A recording.

She pressed send.

Daniel saw.

He kicked the phone from her hand.

It skidded beneath the cage.

The basement speakers went silent.

Then every fluorescent light shut off.

Emergency red lamps came on.

A mechanical lock released upstairs.

Victor had opened another door.

Daniel pulled me toward it.

Behind us, agents continued hammering against the shutters.

Laura tried to stand.

Her body would not cooperate.

Sarah crawled toward the cleaning cart.

I clawed at the concrete.

Daniel leaned close to my ear.

“You should have signed.”

I turned my head.

Blood from my lip touched his cheek.

“You should have killed me before she came.”

His eyes narrowed.

I drove my elbow backward into his throat.

He coughed and loosened his grip.

I rolled away.

A sharp cramp seized my abdomen.

Warm liquid ran down my inner thigh.

I looked down.

Blood mixed with water on the floor.

Daniel saw it.

Panic entered his face for the first time.

Not concern for me.

Concern for the trust.

If the baby died before birth, the inheritance conditions might change.

Victor’s voice returned through another speaker.

“Get her upstairs now.”

Daniel lifted me by force.

I screamed toward the locked entrance.

“Help!”

The shutters buckled inward.

One corner tore free.

A gloved hand reached through.

Daniel dragged me up the stairs.

Laura caught his leg.

He kicked her away.

Sarah pulled herself upright using the cart.

Then she threw the entire cart into Daniel’s path.

Its wheel caught beneath his boot.

He stumbled.

I fell sideways onto the staircase.

Pain tore through my abdomen again.

The exterior wall exploded inward.

Agents entered through dust and metal.

Daniel grabbed me around the neck and pulled the electric prod against my belly.

“Back up!”

Everyone froze.

A female federal agent stepped through the breach.

She aimed her weapon at Daniel.

Behind her stood a man I had never seen.

He was older.

Silver-haired.

Handcuffed.

My mother looked at him from the floor.

Her eyes widened.

“Robert?”

The man stared at her.

May you like

Then at me.

My dead father was standing inside the basement.
