Chapter 1 - THE SKILLET

The skillet hit my fourteen-month-old daughter before I reached the bottom stair.

I heard the iron connect, heard Vanessa scream, “GET OUT OF MY DAUGHTER'S CHAIR RIGHT NOW!”—and then Emma’s tiny body dropped from Lily’s chair onto the hardwood.

For half a second, everything inside me stopped.

Then I ran.

“EMMA! OPEN YOUR EYES, BABY!”

I dropped beside her so hard my knees struck the floor. Food was scattered beneath the table. The cast-iron skillet had landed a few feet from Emma’s sneakers. Her lavender sweater was twisted at one shoulder, and she wasn’t crying.

That frightened me more than screaming would have.

I slipped one hand beneath her neck and another around her small body, forcing myself not to shake her.

“Emma. Mommy’s here. Come on, sweetheart.”

Vanessa stood beside the kitchen island in her red apron, breathing fast, but she didn’t kneel. She didn’t apologize. She didn’t even look frightened by what she had done.

She pointed at my baby.

“NEXT TIME, SHE'LL NEVER FORGET IT.”

Something hot and violent moved through me.

I carefully put Emma on her side, rose, crossed the space between us, and slapped Vanessa so hard she stumbled backward into the counter.

Her eyes went wide.

Mine didn’t.

I turned away before rage made me do something that would keep me from Emma.

My phone was on the table.

I grabbed it to call 911.

A message banner appeared before I could unlock the screen.

The sender was Margaret.

Only the first line was visible.

Did Vanessa do it yet?

I stared at those five words.

Behind me, Margaret Carter had reached the kitchen from the hallway. Her cream knit jacket hung perfectly over her shoulders. Her pearls were still centered at her throat.

But her face had gone completely white.

I slowly turned toward her.

“Did you stage this?”

Margaret moved faster than I had ever seen her move.

She lunged for my phone.

Her fingers closed over the top edge.

I jerked it back.

“No.”

“Rachel, give me that.”

The command in her voice was so familiar I almost obeyed automatically.

Almost.

Emma made a faint sound behind me.

That broke whatever hold Margaret had spent years building.

I shoved the phone into my pocket and dropped beside my daughter again.

“Call an ambulance,” I told Vanessa.

Neither woman moved.

That was when I understood the first piece of the nightmare.

Vanessa’s attack had shocked Margaret.

But the attack itself hadn’t.

Margaret had been waiting for something to happen to Emma.

I called 911 myself.

As the dispatcher answered, Margaret whispered to Vanessa, barely loud enough for me to hear.

“You were supposed to scare her.”

Vanessa snapped her head toward her mother.

And Margaret realized I had heard every word.

📖 I thought getting Emma safely out of that kitchen would be the hardest thing I faced, until Margaret made one decision that changed who everyone would believe. 👇
