Chapter 13 - BELLMERE SAFE

The Bellmere safe was behind a painting in Laura’s grandmother’s study.

I knew the safe existed.

I didn’t know the code.

Rachel did.

Laura had placed it inside her estate instructions.

Inside were jewelry boxes, property records, and an old iPhone wrapped in a cloth pouch.

Archive phone.

We imaged it before opening anything.

The forensic technician recovered messages, recordings, and photographs.

Most related to Northcrest.

Then we found the midpoint explosion.

A video.

Laura.

Corinne.

Evelyn Vale.

All three sitting at Bellmere’s dining table six months before Laura died.

Laura had hidden the phone on a bookshelf.

Corinne’s mother spoke first.

“You have your money back from Daniel. Leave my daughter alone.”

Laura answered, “Not all of it came back.”

“Then take the loss.”

“No.”

Corinne leaned forward.

“If you report this, I’ll lose everything.”

“You took from me.”

“I moved money I believed I was owed.”

“You forged invoices.”

Corinne’s jaw tightened.

Then Laura said:

“And now you’re asking about Ethan’s finances and my life insurance.”

Silence.

Evelyn looked at Corinne.

That seemed new even to her.

Corinne replied:

“I asked because you threatened me with ruin. I wanted to know whether you had anything to lose too.”

The room on the recording went cold.

Then Laura said:

“You came near my baby.”

Corinne scoffed.

“I photographed her once.”

“You followed me to the pediatrician.”

“Because you wouldn’t answer.”

“I am filing.”

Evelyn slapped the table.

“No courts.”

Laura stood.

“This is over.”

Corinne rose too.

“No. You don’t decide when it’s over.”

That line echoed through me.

Then came the part that changed the entire story.

Evelyn turned to Corinne and said:

“You told me Ethan would never know.”

Laura froze.

“What does Ethan have to do with this?”

Corinne stared at her mother.

Evelyn realized she had said too much.

Laura stepped closer.

“What did you do?”

Video ended.

Nothing after.

The technician confirmed file integrity.

I sat back.

Corinne had some plan involving me before Laura died.

Before we met.

Before the charity gala.

That destroyed the idea that she only approached me afterward out of curiosity.

She had been thinking about me while Laura was alive.

What plan?

The phone contained an answer.

A draft email from Corinne to an unsent address Laura had somehow obtained.

If Laura won’t settle, Ethan is the pressure point. He has no idea what she covered up during the sale. Once he knows, she loses the clean marriage she protects.

So initially, I was leverage.

Not romantic target.

Corinne planned to expose Laura’s compromised handling of the Northcrest sale to me.

That was ugly.

But not yet sinister.

Then another recovered message, sent to Evelyn three days before Laura died:

She says she’ll tell Ethan herself. If she does, I lose leverage.

There.

Immediate stakes.

Laura had decided to confess.

Corinne was about to lose the weapon she had built around my ignorance.

And days later Laura died before telling me.

For the first time, my grief stopped asking whether Laura’s silence had been betrayal.

She had been preparing to end it.

Corinne knew.

And that made the final week of Laura’s life far more dangerous than I had imagined.

📖 Bellmere revealed I had been Corinne’s leverage target before Laura died, and Laura’s decision to confess everything threatened the one advantage Corinne had spent years protecting—my ignorance. 👇
