Chapter 2: The Locked Room

Chapter 2: The Locked Room

Three days earlier, Elena had been alone on the bathroom floor, gripping a towel with one hand and her stomach with the other.

Her contractions were eight minutes apart.

Then six.

Then five.

Her phone was at three percent.

The bedroom door was locked from the outside.

At first, she thought it was an accident.

A stupid, cruel accident.

Marcos had installed the smart lock months before, claiming it was for “security.”

Pilar loved it.

“No one should come and go without the man of the house knowing,” she had said.

Elena had hated that sentence.

But by then, there were many things she hated and did not say out loud.

She called Marcos first.

No answer.

She called again.

No answer.

Then she texted.

The baby is coming.

Please come home.

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

No reply.

Another contraction hit so hard she dropped the phone.

She bit down on the towel to keep from screaming.

Downstairs, the house was silent.

Too silent.

No Pilar criticizing her.

No Marcos yelling about the hospital bag being in the hallway.

No car in the driveway.

Just Elena, locked in the master bedroom, nine months pregnant, sweating through pain while the man who promised to protect her flew to Miami with his mother.

She called Pilar next.

The call connected.

For one second, Elena heard music.

Waves.

A woman laughing.

Then Pilar’s voice came on, annoyed.

“Elena, what now?”

“I’m in labor,” Elena gasped. “The door is locked. I can’t get out.”

There was a pause.

Then Pilar sighed.

“Always dramatic.”

“Please,” Elena cried. “The baby is coming.”

In the background, Marcos said something Elena could not hear.

Pilar covered the phone badly.

“She says she’s in labor.”

Marcos laughed.

Then his voice came closer.

“Tell her to stop ruining the trip.”

Elena froze.

Pilar came back on the line.

“Drink water. Wait until we return.”

Then she hung up.

Elena stared at the phone.

For the first time in her marriage, she understood with perfect clarity that silence had not protected her.

It had trained them.

👉 But long before that locked door, Marcos had already been stealing Elena’s life one card swipe at a time.
