Chapter 4: The Click of the Lock

Chapter 4: The Click of the Lock

On the morning he left, Marcos stood in the bedroom doorway with a suitcase.

Elena was sitting on the bed, both hands on her stomach.

“You’re really going?” she asked.

“My mother needs a break,” he said.

“I’m due any day.”

He shrugged.

“Then wait.”

Pilar appeared behind him, wearing sunglasses indoors.

“If she goes into labor, she can call an ambulance,” Pilar said. “Women have babies every day.”

Elena reached for her phone.

Marcos stepped forward and took the spare house key from the dresser.

Then he looked at the smart lock on the bedroom door.

“Rest,” he said. “Don’t wander around and hurt yourself.”

Elena stared at him.

“You’re locking me in?”

He smiled.

“For your safety.”

Then he closed the door.

The lock clicked.

That sound followed Elena into labor.

Now, on the bathroom floor, with her phone almost dead and the pain coming faster, Elena remembered something her father had told her before he died.

Never let anyone convince you that needing help is weakness. The weak ones are the people who leave you there.

She dragged herself toward the nightstand.

Her hospital bag was outside the locked door.

Her shoes were outside.

The baby’s blanket was outside.

But her old tablet was in the drawer.

The screen was cracked, but it still worked on Wi-Fi.

Her fingers shook as she opened the emergency app connected to the home security system.

Marcos had changed most passwords.

Not all.

He had forgotten the backup admin account belonged to Elena’s father.

She unlocked the security panel.

The bedroom camera came online.

The hallway camera.

The smart lock log.

There it was.

Bedroom door locked manually by Marcos at 9:12 a.m.

Front door opened by Marcos at 9:18.

Garage opened.

Garage closed.

Then nothing.

Elena took screenshots.

Then she called 911 from the tablet.

When the dispatcher answered, Elena cried so hard she could barely speak.

“I’m locked in a bedroom,” she gasped. “I’m in labor. My husband left me.”

👉 Twelve minutes later, firefighters broke down the door — and Elena finally had witnesses.
