Chapter 1 - The Moment Grant Walked In

Noah’s scream reached Grant Mercer before the front door was fully open.

He stepped into the living room and stopped.

His twelve-month-old son was barefoot beside the sofa, sobbing so hard his tiny chest shook.

Tessa Monroe stood between him and Vivienne.

One hand covered the side of her head.

The decorative vase lay on the carpet near her feet.

Vivienne stood frozen.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Grant looked at Noah.

Then Tessa.

Then Vivienne.

“What happened?”

Tessa tried to answer.

Vivienne spoke first.

“She attacked me.”

Grant’s eyes moved to the red mark across Vivienne’s cheek.

Then to Tessa’s head.

Vivienne continued quickly.

“She slapped me. Then she lost control.”

Tessa stared at her.

“You kicked Noah.”

Grant’s face changed.

Vivienne laughed.

“That is insane.”

Tessa pointed toward the ceiling corner.

“There’s a camera.”

Vivienne stopped smiling.

Grant followed her finger.

The security camera he had installed after a burglary attempt was blinking.

Recording.

Grant looked back at Vivienne.

“You knew that was there.”

Her expression tightened.

“I forgot.”

Tessa bent down to Noah.

Grant reached him first.

His son clung to his suit jacket.

Tessa whispered:

“She kicked him because he crawled toward the sofa.”

Grant looked at Vivienne again.

Vivienne raised both hands.

“She’s lying because I caught her stealing.”

Tessa’s mouth fell open.

“Stealing what?”

“My jewelry.”

Grant said nothing.

That frightened Vivienne.

Because Grant wasn’t shouting.

He was thinking.

Then Noah reached toward Tessa.

Grant noticed.

His son wanted the injured caregiver.

Not Vivienne.

Grant picked him up and handed him carefully to Tessa.

“Take Noah into the kitchen.”

Vivienne stepped forward.

“No.”

Grant looked at her.

“One more step toward my son and you’ll regret it.”

She stopped.

Tessa carried Noah away.

Grant walked to the security-system panel.

Vivienne’s face drained of color.

“Grant.”

He didn’t answer.

“Grant, wait.”

He entered the passcode.

Then looked at her.

“What exactly am I going to see?”

Vivienne swallowed.

And for the first time, Grant understood that whatever happened before he arrived was only one part of the problem.

Because Vivienne wasn’t afraid of the kick.

She was afraid of what the camera had recorded before it.

👉 Grant thought the footage would show only the attack—but the recording began forty minutes earlier, when Vivienne made a phone call about Noah.
