Chapter 11 - “The Money Leaves on Friday”

Elena closed her eyes.

“He said it outside the door.”

Brooks leaned forward.

“What exactly?”

“The money leaves on Friday.”

That day was Thursday.

Cassandro looked at Martin.

“What money?”

Martin began checking accounts connected to the shell companies.

Most had been frozen.

One had not.

A trust account in the Cayman Islands held nearly six million dollars.

A transfer was scheduled for Friday morning.

Destination unknown.

Brooks contacted federal investigators.

The transfer was flagged.

At 8:03 a.m. Friday, someone logged into the account.

The IP address bounced through several servers.

But the bank required physical confirmation for a transfer that large.

A courier had been instructed to collect signed documents from a private marina in Fort Lauderdale.

Brooks smiled for the first time in days.

“He has to show himself.”

Cassandro wanted to go.

Elena stopped him.

“No.”

“He kept you in a basement.”

“And that’s exactly why you don’t go.”

Cassandro looked at her.

Elena’s voice stayed calm.

“Come home to Audrey.”

He understood.

This was not about revenge.

It was about ending it.

Federal agents went instead.

At 10:16 a.m., Graham Knox arrived at the marina wearing sunglasses and carrying a leather briefcase.

He never reached the courier.

Agents arrested him on the dock.

Inside the briefcase were forged passports.

Cash.

Account credentials.

And one document that destroyed the story the Knox family had told for two decades.

Graham’s original confession from the old Vale scandal.

Signed.

Notarized.

Cassandro’s father had never framed him.

Graham had admitted stealing.

The Vales had kept the confession private to spare Vivienne and Damian public humiliation as teenagers.

Instead of gratitude, Graham had rewritten the story for his children.

He had raised them on revenge.

Vivienne learned the truth that afternoon.

Her attorney showed her the document.

She stared at her father’s signature.

“He told us Cassandro’s father destroyed him.”

Brooks answered.

“Your father destroyed himself.”

Vivienne’s mouth trembled.

For the first time, Cassandro almost saw the frightened girl she must once have been.

Then he remembered Audrey falling into the pool.

Elena in the basement.

Seventeen million dollars stolen.

Whatever Graham had taught Vivienne, she had chosen what to become.

And consequences were coming.
