Chapter 5 - The Lie Vanessa Almost Won With

Daniel took off his suit jacket and wrapped it around Eleanor’s shoulders without asking.

She was still shaking.

Rosa and Millie helped her to a stone bench near the hedge while Daniel turned back to Vanessa.

“What happened?”

Vanessa did not answer immediately.

That was deliberate.

She looked hurt.

Insulted.

As if she were the one who had been publicly wronged.

Then she let out a slow breath and said, “She broke into your father’s private things and tried to steal from the estate.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

He turned to Eleanor.

The look in his eyes was not anger.

It was confusion.

That hurt her more.

“Ellie?”

Eleanor swallowed.

Water still dripped from her chin.

“I was protecting what your father left for you.”

Vanessa laughed.

“She’s been saying strange things for months.”

Rosa stepped forward before she could stop herself.

“That’s not true.”

Vanessa wheeled around.

“No one asked you.”

Daniel’s eyes flashed at that.

He looked at Millie.

Then at Rosa.

Then at the soaked black leather pouch still clutched in Eleanor’s hand.

He noticed everything.

The way Vanessa kept glancing at the pouch.

The way Eleanor gripped it not like stolen property, but like something entrusted.

The way the staff instinctively moved toward Eleanor and away from Vanessa.

Daniel held out his hand gently.

“Ellie. Give it to me.”

Eleanor looked up at him.

At the boy she raised.

At the man his father trusted.

And for one terrible second, she was afraid.

Not of him.

Of being too late.

But then she saw something in his face she had not seen in months.

Not grief.

Not exhaustion.

Clarity.

So she placed the pouch in his hand.

Vanessa took one step forward.

“Daniel, you don’t know what she’s been doing.”

He turned to her.

“I know you had a hose pointed at a woman who’s old enough to be your mother.”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

He cut her off.

“In front of my staff.”

She bristled at the word my.

Good.

Daniel looked back at Eleanor.

“Did my father tell you to keep this for me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The week before he died.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Vanessa jumped in.

“Because she’s manipulating you.”

Eleanor closed her eyes briefly.

There it was again.

The same script.

Old.

Confused.

Manipulative.

But Daniel’s face changed.

This time not with uncertainty.

With anger.

At Vanessa.

Not Eleanor.

He looked down at the wet pouch, then unzipped it.

Inside was the envelope with his name in Richard’s handwriting.

His whole body went still.

Daniel knew his father’s writing instantly.

He touched it once with his thumb, as if confirming it was real.

Vanessa lunged half a step toward him.

“Daniel—”

He moved the envelope out of reach.

“Not another word.”

The lawn fell silent.

Even the birds seemed to stop.

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Come with me.”

Vanessa stepped in front of them.

“This concerns me too.”

Daniel’s eyes went flat.

“No,” he said. “It really doesn’t.”

Then he took Eleanor by the arm—not roughly, but protectively—and led her into the house.

Rosa and Millie followed close behind.

Vanessa remained on the lawn, chest rising and falling.

Arrogance was still on her face.

But now fear had joined it.

Because Daniel had just taken the one thing she could never charm away from him.
