Chapter 7 - What Vanessa Did When Richard Was Weak

The second video file came from a hidden camera angle closer to Richard’s desk.

This one had audio.

Margaret hit play.

The room went still.

Vanessa stood on-screen beside Richard’s chair, smiling that same elegant smile she wore in public.

But Richard did not look well.

He looked tired.

Slow.

A little confused.

A medication bottle sat on the desk.

Richard reached for it.

Vanessa took it first.

“Not yet,” she said.

Richard frowned. “I need that.”

“You need to sign first.”

She slid a paper toward him.

Richard looked down at it and rubbed his forehead.

“This isn’t the file I asked for.”

Vanessa’s voice turned honey-sweet.

“It’s just a transfer authorization.”

“I told you to wait for Daniel.”

Her face changed instantly.

Cold.

Annoyed.

Then she said the words that made Daniel stand up so fast his chair scraped the floor.

“Daniel won’t protect you from paperwork, Richard. Sign it.”

Richard pushed the paper away weakly.

Vanessa leaned closer, lowering her voice.

“If you keep fighting me on this, I’ll make sure that old woman downstairs loses her room first.”

Eleanor inhaled sharply in the office.

She had never known that part.

On-screen, Richard looked up at Vanessa with the same disgust Daniel felt in his bones now.

“Don’t touch Eleanor.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Then stop making this hard.”

Margaret paused the video.

No one spoke for a long moment.

Finally, Harold said, “My God.”

Daniel’s face had gone pale with rage.

Not explosive rage.

The cold kind.

The kind that makes decisions instead of scenes.

“She withheld his medication.”

Margaret nodded grimly.

“And coerced signatures.”

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“She used you to pressure him.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled for the first time, but she blinked the tears away.

“She knew he would fight for you. So she made him fight for me too.”

That broke something in Daniel.

He crossed the room in two steps and knelt beside Eleanor like he had when he was a boy with scraped knees.

“I’m sorry.”

She touched his face with a wet, wrinkled hand.

“This isn’t where you apologize, child.”

He exhaled shakily.

“No. But I should have seen it.”

Eleanor’s expression softened.

“She hid it well.”

Daniel stood and turned back to Margaret.

“What can we do right now?”

Margaret did not hesitate.

“Freeze the company accounts linked in these files. Remove Vanessa’s access to the estate office. Notify the board. And call the police.”

Harold added, “And the labor investigator. If she delayed wages, staff may have claims too.”

Daniel nodded once.

Then he looked through the window toward the lawn.

Vanessa was still out there, pacing now.

Phone in hand.

Probably calling her brother.

Probably planning her next lie.

Good.

Let her.

Because for the first time since his father died, Daniel had the truth.

But there was still one more thing Richard had hidden.

At the bottom of the flash drive was a scanned trust amendment signed six days before his death.

Margaret opened it.

And her mouth tightened.

Daniel read the first page.

Then the second.

Then he looked at Eleanor in stunned silence.

“Ellie…”

“What is it?”

He swallowed.

“My father made you co-trustee of the estate until all investigations were resolved.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“No.”

“Yes.”

He read the next line slowly, almost like a vow.

“‘Because no person in this house has shown greater loyalty, honesty, or love toward my family than Eleanor Brooks.’”

Downstairs, a door slammed.

Vanessa had realized something was happening.

May you like

And she was coming.

👉 Vanessa thought she still had room to manipulate Daniel, but she was about to walk into a library where she no longer held any power at all.
