Chapter 13 - The Fall of Lucian and Valeria Hale

The board meeting began at nine the next morning.
For the first time in almost a year, Margaret entered Romano Holdings through the main doors.
She wore a simple navy dress Dominic had bought her years earlier.
But she carried the same battered handbag.
Reporters gathered outside.
Rumors of financial fraud had spread overnight.
Dominic walked beside his mother.
Emma remained safely at home with trusted staff.
Inside the boardroom, twelve directors waited.
Lucian's chair was empty.
Valeria's foundation seat was empty.
Samuel Keene stood near the projection screen.
Dominic did not waste time.
"Yesterday, evidence confirmed that multiple proxy authorizations connected to the Romano Family Trust were forged."
Whispers filled the room.
He placed copies on the table.
"Those authorizations were used to transfer voting rights toward Lucian Hale."
One director raised his hand.
"Is Lucian denying this?"
"His attorneys are."
"Then what proves he knew?"
Dominic displayed the server logs.
Deletion attempts.
Transfer records.
Administrator edits.
Then Margaret opened the blue ledger.
The room became silent.
She explained how Angelo had hidden it.
How signatures had been forged.
How attempts had been made to discredit her.
Dominic played selected portions of Angelo's recording.
Not the part about Gabriel.
That secret remained private.
The directors listened to Angelo name Lucian.
Then Samuel showed the Meridian transfers.
By noon, the vote was unanimous.
Lucian Hale was terminated.
All proxy authority connected to him was voided.
Valeria was removed from the Romano Foundation.
A forensic audit was authorized.
The company issued a statement cooperating with federal investigators.
For fourteen months Margaret had been treated like an inconvenience.
Now directors who had barely returned her calls stood to apologize.
She listened politely.
Then she said, "You should not apologize because my son proved I was right."
The room quieted.
"Apologize because you found it easier to believe a grieving older woman was confused than to ask whether powerful people were lying."
No one answered.
Dominic looked at his mother with pride.
Margaret continued.
"Lucian and Valeria succeeded because everyone gave them small pieces of authority without asking why."
She touched the handbag beside her.
"My husband used to say empires are rarely stolen in one night. They're handed away one key at a time."
Dominic remembered the brass key.
And the second key they still did not have.
After the meeting, Samuel approached.
"The auditors found something."
"What?"
"Meridian paid a private medical consulting company."
Margaret's face drained.
"When?"
"Two weeks before Angelo died."
Dominic stared at Samuel.
"Medical consulting for what?"
"We don't know."
"Company name?"
"Helix Crown Medical."
"Who owns it?"
Samuel handed him a page.
The listed director had died six years earlier.
Shell company.
Dominic's voice became hard.
"Find every payment."
"We already started."
Margaret touched his arm.
"Dominic."
He looked at her.
"Don't decide what this means before you know."
"My father died eleven days after he hid that ledger."
"I know."
"And Lucian's company paid a medical shell company."
"I know."
Dominic looked toward the windows.
"If they killed him..."
Margaret interrupted.
"We don't know that."
But her voice trembled.
They both thought it.
That afternoon police formally charged Lucian and Valeria with several financial and property offenses while additional investigations remained active.
Dominic watched them escorted from the courthouse.
Lucian stopped near him.
Reporters shouted questions.
Lucian leaned close.
"You won the company."
Dominic said nothing.
"You saved Margaret."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
Lucian smiled.
"But Angelo didn't hide the ledger from me."
"Who did he hide it from?"
Lucian's smile disappeared.
"You already know his name."
Gabriel.
Dominic stepped closer.
"Where is he?"
Lucian whispered, "If Gabriel wanted you dead, you would already be dead."
Dominic grabbed his jacket.
Officers pulled them apart.
Lucian shouted as he was moved away.
"He doesn't want you, Dominic."
Dominic froze.
Lucian laughed.
"He wants the little girl."

Margaret, standing several feet away, heard him.
And for the first time since the nightmare began, victory felt like fear.
