Chapter 7 - Box 317

St. Gabriel Private Bank occupied five floors of a stone building near Madison Avenue.

Private clients entered through an underground entrance.

Dominic had not visited in years.

Margaret had never been there.

At 5:11 a.m., the overnight manager reluctantly agreed to contact a senior officer after Dominic identified himself.

Money opened doors.

Fear opened them faster.

At 5:42, they stood inside a private vault.

Margaret placed the brass key on the table.

The bank officer checked the number.

"Registered owner is Angelo Romano."

Dominic swallowed.

"My father is deceased."

"There is an authorized secondary holder."

Margaret looked up.

"Who?"

The officer checked.

"Margaret Romano."

Angelo had prepared for this.

The box was retrieved.

Margaret inserted the key.

The officer used the bank key.

Together they turned them.

The lid opened.

Inside were three envelopes.

A portable recording device.

A sealed folder.

And a photograph.

Dominic reached for the photograph first.

It showed Angelo standing beside Peter Voss and another man Dominic did not recognize.

The unknown man had been partially turned away.

On the back, Angelo had written one sentence.

Three men know the truth. One will betray the others.

Dominic looked at Margaret.

"Who is he?"

"I don't know."

Dominic opened the first envelope.

Bank statements.

Millions of dollars had moved through Meridian Maritime.

Then through companies named Black Harbor Consulting, Larkspur Development, and North Coast Assets.

Each eventually transferred money into accounts connected to Romano Holdings projects.

But the money moved in reverse too.

Company funds disappeared.

Dates matched entries in the blue ledger.

The second envelope contained copies of authorization forms.

Margaret's forged signature appeared repeatedly.

Dominic's appeared twice.

His blood went cold.

"I didn't sign these."

Margaret whispered, "Neither did I."

The third envelope contained a handwritten letter.

Dominic recognized his father's writing.

Dominic,

If you are reading this, I failed to finish what I started.

Do not trust signatures.

Do not trust board votes.

Do not trust the person who tells you this is only about money.

Money is how they enter.

Family is what they want.

Dominic stopped.

Margaret read beside him.

The next line had been heavily underlined.

Peter knows the accounts. The ledger proves the transfers. But the recording proves why.

Dominic looked toward the portable recorder.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then Angelo's voice.

"October ninth. Peter confirmed Meridian is being used to move capital outside the trust."

Another voice answered.

Peter Voss.

"They're covering it with development losses."

Angelo asked, "Who authorized the transfers?"

Peter hesitated.

Then said, "Lucian Hale."

Margaret closed her eyes.

Dominic's jaw tightened.

The recording continued.

"But Lucian isn't the origin," Peter said.

"What does that mean?"

"He's reporting to somebody."

"Who?"

Static swallowed several seconds.

Then Angelo's voice returned.

"Say the name again."

A loud sound.

The recording ended.

Dominic pressed play again.

Same result.

The most important name was missing.

Margaret opened the sealed folder.

Inside was an original shareholder register showing that Lucian had illegally accumulated proxy authority through falsified signatures.

Enough to seize temporary board control if Margaret signed the new papers.

Dominic understood the structure now.

Lucian was days away from taking control of Romano Holdings.

But his father's letter said it was not only about money.

Dominic took photographs of every document.

"We're removing everything."

The bank officer shook his head.

"The box has a special hold instruction."

"From whom?"

"Angelo Romano."

"What instruction?"

The officer retrieved a card.

"If the secondary holder accesses the box, one item must remain until a second key is presented."

Margaret frowned.

"What item?"

The officer lifted the lower tray.

Beneath it was another locked compartment.

No visible keyhole.

Only a narrow mechanical slot.

Dominic stared at it.

"Where is the second key?"

The officer shook his head.

"I wouldn't know."

Margaret thought of Angelo's letter.

Three men know the truth.

Peter.

Angelo.

The unknown man in the photograph.

Dominic looked at the picture again.

"What if he has it?"

Margaret whispered, "Then we need to find him."

Dominic gathered the documents.

His phone rang.

Security at the mansion.

He answered.

"Mr. Romano, there's been an incident."

"What happened?"

"Someone entered your mother's room."

Dominic looked at Margaret.

"Was anything taken?"

A pause.

"No, sir."

"Then what?"

"We found a bottle of prescription medication hidden beneath her pillow."

Margaret went pale.

"I don't take prescription medication."

Dominic's expression hardened.

The security man continued.

"The label has your mother's name on it."

Dominic knew exactly what Lucian was doing.

If forged documents failed, they would build a medical case.

If Margaret could be declared incompetent, her voting rights could be transferred without consent.

Dominic closed his fist around the phone.

"They're not stealing a company anymore."

Margaret looked at him.

"What are they doing?"

May you like

Dominic's voice was ice.

"They're trying to erase you."
