Chapter 13 - Lily Tells the Ballroom the Truth

“Let her go.”
Alessia’s voice was quiet.
That frightened Evelyn more than shouting would have.
Evelyn pulled Lily closer.
“She needs to stop lying.”
Lily cried out.
Cecilia moved forward.
An investigator did too.
Evelyn raised one hand.
“Stay back.”
Alessia crossed the ballroom slowly.
“Evelyn.”
“She destroyed everything.”
Alessia stopped.
“Lily destroyed nothing.”
“She found the recorder.”
There it was.
Confirmation.
Guests stared.
Evelyn’s face had lost its elegance.
Years of resentment seemed to rise through the carefully controlled surface.
“She snooped. She listened. She told stories.”
Lily’s voice trembled.
“They weren’t stories.”
Evelyn looked down at her.
“Be quiet.”
“No.”
It was the smallest word spoken all evening.
And the bravest.
Evelyn stared at the child.
Lily’s tears continued, but she lifted her chin.
“You told me Mommy was crazy.”
Evelyn tightened her grip.
“You told me to say she screams.”
“Lily,” Garrett warned.
The child turned toward him.
“You said you’d take Mommy away.”
Garrett’s face hardened.
Alessia felt something inside her break open.
Not weakness.
Pride.
Lily had spent weeks afraid of these people.
Now, surrounded by adults, lights, cameras, and power, she was telling the truth anyway.
Alessia extended her hand.
“Come to me.”
Lily tried.
Evelyn held her back.
That was enough.
One investigator moved in.
Evelyn released Lily immediately.
Lily ran into Alessia’s arms.
Alessia held her.
The room had become completely silent.
Garrett stared at them.
Then at the guests.
His plan was dead.
His reputation was collapsing in real time.
His mother was exposed.
And Lily had become the witness he had worked hardest to silence.
Garrett snapped.
“That child has ruined this family.”
Alessia looked up.
“No.”
“She lies.”
“No.”
“She manipulates you.”
“No.”
Garrett stepped toward them.
“She is the reason you never trusted me.”
Alessia stood slowly.
She placed Lily behind her.
“I trusted you more than I trusted my instincts.”
Garrett laughed bitterly.
“And now what? You throw away 4 years because a 6-year-old cries?”
Alessia’s face went cold.
“I’m throwing away 4 years because I finally understand them.”
Garrett moved closer.
An investigator warned him.
“Sir, stay where you are.”
Garrett ignored him.
“You think these people care about you?”
Alessia said nothing.
“They care about your name. Your money.”
Still nothing.
“I was the only person who stayed when you were broken.”
Alessia almost smiled.
“You came because I was broken.”
That landed.
Garrett’s face twisted.
She continued.
“You studied my grief.”
“Stop.”
“You studied my daughter.”
“Stop.”
“You studied my father.”
“Alessia.”
“You didn’t rescue me.”
Her voice never rose.
“You selected me.”
Garrett lunged toward her.
The investigator intercepted him.
For a moment, the ballroom exploded into movement.
Garrett was pushed back.
Guests moved away.
Evelyn shouted.
Lily cried.
Then Garrett stopped resisting.
He straightened his tuxedo.
And smiled.
It was a terrible smile.
“You still don’t have enough.”
Alessia stared at him.
“For what?”
“To prove we killed Vincent.”
Evelyn’s head snapped toward him.
Garrett realized what he had said.
Too late.
Jonathan stepped forward.
“No one accused you of killing him just now.”
The entire room seemed to inhale.
Garrett’s face went blank.
Evelyn whispered, “Idiot.”
Alessia looked between them.
“Interesting choice of words.”
Garrett backed away.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Daniel Mercer entered beside 2 detectives.
Garrett stared at him as if seeing a ghost.
Mercer stopped.
“Hello, Garrett.”
Evelyn’s knees almost gave way.
Garrett whispered, “You’re dead.”
Mercer smiled without warmth.
“That was the idea.”
One detective approached Garrett.
“Mr. Hale, we need to speak with you regarding the death of Vincent Moretti.”
Garrett looked toward the nearest exit.
Security moved into position.
He was trapped.
But before detectives reached him, Evelyn suddenly shouted.
“He did it.”
Garrett turned.
May you like
The words had come from his own mother.
And in that instant, the Hales finally turned on each other.
