Chapter 14 - The Fall of Garrett Hale

Garrett stared at Evelyn.
“What did you say?”
Evelyn’s face was white.
“You were there.”
“So were you.”
“You gave him the drink.”
“You brought the medication.”
Guests backed away as if the truth itself had become dangerous.
Jonathan quietly motioned for everyone to remain silent.
The detectives did not interrupt.
Garrett took one step toward his mother.
“You told me it would only scare him.”
Evelyn’s mouth opened.
Alessia stopped breathing.
There.
Not a complete confession.
But close.
Very close.
Garrett continued.
“You said his heart was weak. You said he’d sign the papers if he thought he was dying.”
Evelyn’s face twisted.
“And you agreed.”
“You wanted revenge.”
“You wanted the trust.”
“You wanted it too.”
Garrett laughed.
“You spent my whole life telling me the Morettis stole everything from us.”
“Because they did.”
“No.”
His voice became louder.
“Dad stole. Vincent caught him.”
Evelyn flinched.
Garrett’s bitterness spilled out.
“You knew that.”
“Be quiet.”
“You knew Dad was guilty.”
“Be quiet.”
“But you needed someone to blame.”
Evelyn slapped him.
The sound cracked through the ballroom.
Garrett stared at her.
Then he laughed.
“You built me for this.”
Evelyn’s expression broke.
For the first time, Alessia saw not a powerful matriarch but an old woman confronted by the wreckage of her own hatred.
Garrett looked at the detectives.
“My mother got the medication from Vale.”
Evelyn shouted, “He put it in Vincent’s drink.”
“He was supposed to get sick.”
“You watched him collapse.”
“So did you.”
“You stopped me from calling an ambulance.”
Garrett froze.
The detectives exchanged a look.
Alessia’s heart pounded.
Garrett whispered, “That was you.”
Evelyn’s voice cracked.
“You said we needed the trust papers first.”
“No.”
“You searched his desk while he was dying.”
“No.”
“You found the wrong copy.”
“Shut up.”
“You left him on that floor.”
Garrett moved so quickly that security stepped forward.
But he did not reach Evelyn.
He stopped.
Then he looked at Alessia.
Something in his expression changed.
Hatred.
Shame.
Desperation.
“You have no idea what it was like growing up with her.”
Alessia held Lily against her side.
“That doesn’t excuse what you did.”
“I didn’t mean for your father to die.”
“But you left him.”
Garrett’s eyes filled with something that might have been regret.
Or fear.
“He was still breathing.”
Alessia felt tears sting her eyes.
“How long?”
“What?”
“How long was my father alive after he collapsed?”
Garrett looked away.
“How long?”
Evelyn answered.
“17 minutes.”
Alessia nearly lost her balance.
17 minutes.
Her father had been alive.
17 minutes during which 2 people could have called for help.
Instead they searched for documents.
17 minutes for a trust.
17 minutes for revenge.
17 minutes because people her father had once employed valued money more than his life.
One detective stepped forward.
“Garrett Hale, turn around.”
Garrett looked at Alessia.
“Please.”
She stared at him.
4 years of marriage.
Birthday mornings.
Christmas photographs.
Family vacations.
Hospital nights.
Promises.
All of them stood behind his face like ghosts.
Then Lily’s small hand found Alessia’s.
And the ghosts disappeared.
Garrett whispered, “I loved you.”
Alessia answered softly.
“No. You loved what you thought you could take from me.”
The detective reached for his arm.
Garrett pulled away.
His eyes dropped to Lily.
Something vicious returned to his face.
“You.”
Lily moved behind Alessia.
Garrett took a step toward her.
“You ruined everything.”
The detectives ordered him to stop.
He ignored them.
Alessia stepped in front of Lily.
Garrett’s composure finally shattered.
“Naughty children need to be taught a lesson.”
Then he kicked toward Lily.
The movement happened so quickly that Alessia reacted before thought.
Lily fell to her knees.
And the ballroom became the moment Alessia would remember forever.
She struck Garrett.
He stumbled into the fountain.
He charged.
She drove him backward into the silver banquet console.
Glass and flowers crashed around him.
Then Evelyn screamed the words that destroyed whatever sympathy remained.
“That bastard child doesn’t deserve to set foot in this house.”
Alessia looked at her wedding ring.
Then at Garrett.
She removed it.
Dropped it onto his soaked chest.
“You abused my child.”
Garrett stared up at her.
“You’re crazy.”
“No.”
She reached into the hidden pocket of her black dress.
The silver flash drive contained the recordings, financial documents, trust forgery, photographs, medical evidence, and copies of Evelyn’s notebook.
Jonathan had handed it to her 23 minutes earlier.
Alessia held it up.
“This is what reality looks like.”
Garrett went pale.
She stood protectively in front of Lily.
“Now crawl out of my house.”
The detectives pulled Garrett to his feet.
This time, he did not fight.
Evelyn was detained moments later.
As they led her toward the doors, she looked back at Alessia.
“This family will collapse without us.”
Alessia looked around the ballroom.
At the shattered glass.
The overturned flowers.
The frightened guests.
The fountain water spreading across the marble.
Then she looked down at Lily.
“No.”
She met Evelyn’s eyes.
“It almost collapsed because of you.”
The doors closed behind them.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Then Alessia knelt beside Lily.
The fury left her face.
Only her mother remained.
“Are you hurt?”
Lily shook her head and threw her arms around her.
Alessia held her.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For not seeing sooner.”
Lily whispered against her shoulder.
“You see now.”
Alessia closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Across the ballroom, Jonathan quietly removed the gala microphone from its stand.
The event was over.
But Alessia knew the story was not.
Because the next morning, prosecutors opened the safe evidence fully.

And inside one sealed document they found something neither Garrett nor Evelyn had known existed.
Vincent Moretti had left Lily one final message.
