The seventy-eight thousand dollars had not gone toward a duplex.
Most of it had been transferred into an account controlled by a man named Brent Lawson.
Harrison knew the name immediately.
Brent was the regional finance director at Harrison’s construction company.
He had worked beside Harrison for eleven years.
He had attended family barbecues.
He had given Wyatt an internship during college.
Detective Grant believed Brent taught Wyatt how to bypass the company’s identity-verification system.
The fraud was larger than one family credit line.
Over eighteen months, Brent had created fake vendor accounts, diverted payments, and used employees’ personal information to secure loans.
Wyatt had become both participant and scapegoat.
Tara had introduced him to the scheme after meeting Brent at a real-estate seminar.
Brent promised them fast money.
Wyatt provided Harrison’s information.
Tara completed the applications.
Brent moved the funds.

Leona wanted to believe this lessened her son’s guilt.

He admitted forwarding tax documents.
He admitted helping Tara open the credit line.
He insisted he never understood how large the scheme was.
Detective Grant asked why he had hit his mother.
Wyatt had no answer.
Not one that made sense.
He stared at the table for nearly a minute.
Then said, “Because she was going to stop me.”
That sentence mattered more to Leona than every apology he later offered.
He had not lost control.
He had used violence as control.
Tara was found two days later at a motel near Jacksonville.
She carried a laptop containing records of eleven fraudulent accounts.
Brent was arrested at Savannah’s airport while attempting to board a flight to Mexico City.
The stolen funds were traced.
Some had already been spent.
Much of it could be recovered.
But when investigators searched Brent’s office, they discovered a folder labeled with Leona’s name.
Inside were printed medical articles, insurance forms, and notes about cognitive decline.
Wyatt’s attempt to portray his mother as forgetful had not been entirely his idea.
Brent had suggested it.
If Leona appeared incompetent, Wyatt could gain access to household accounts without immediate suspicion.
