Chapter 6 - The Bruise at Breakfast

Wyatt came home at three in the morning.

Harrison was in the garage speaking with David.

Leona stood in the kitchen holding the broken camera.

“You told him,” Wyatt said.

She did not answer.

“You told Dad.”

“He needed to know.”

Wyatt kicked the kitchen door shut.

“What did you give him?”

“Everything.”

His eyes moved toward the hallway.

“Where is he?”

“Outside.”

Wyatt stepped closer.

“You had no right.”

Leona held her ground.

“You tried to steal from us.”

“I was borrowing money.”

“You forged account requests.”

“I was fixing my life.”

“With our house?”

“You have more than you need!”

His voice rose.

Leona lowered hers.

“You are leaving.”

He laughed.

Then she said the one thing he could not tolerate.

“Tara was right to be afraid of you.”

Wyatt’s face changed.

He grabbed Leona’s arm.

She pulled away.

His other hand struck the side of her face.

The blow was quick.

Open-handed.

But it turned her head and sent her into the edge of a chair.

For one second, Wyatt looked shocked by what he had done.

Then he blamed her.

“You made me do that.”

Leona touched her cheek.

“No.”

His breathing was heavy.

“You kept pushing.”

“No.”

“Say you understand.”

“I understand exactly what you are.”

Wyatt stepped toward her again.

The garage door opened.

Harrison entered.

Wyatt immediately lowered his hand.

Leona saw the calculation happen in real time.

The softened expression.

The wounded voice.

The performance.

“Dad, she attacked me.”

Harrison looked at Leona’s cheek.

Then at Wyatt.

“Go upstairs.”

“You don’t understand.”

“Go.”

Something in Harrison’s face made Wyatt obey.

As soon as he disappeared, Harrison crossed the kitchen and examined Leona’s cheek without touching it.

“We’re calling the police.”

“No.”

“Leona.”

“If they take him tonight, he’ll say I attacked him.”

“We have the camera.”

“He destroyed it.”

“We have the cloud recording.”

She looked at Harrison.

He had already preserved the files.

For the first time, she understood that she was no longer alone inside the truth.

Still, she asked for one night.

Not to protect Wyatt.

To prepare.

David brought the legal documents at dawn.

A protective-order petition.

A formal notice terminating Wyatt’s right to live in the house.

Evidence of financial fraud.

A civil complaint to recover stolen funds.

And one additional document Harrison kept beneath the others.

That document carried an official seal.

When Wyatt came downstairs the next morning, Harrison was waiting at the breakfast table.

The folder rested beneath his papers.

Leona entered with the bruise fully visible.

Wyatt saw it.

Then he smiled.

“Going to tell him you walked into a door?”

Leona gripped the chair.

Harrison’s eyes lifted.

And the final confrontation began.

👉 Wyatt believed the bruise was only his mother’s word against his—until Harrison revealed that the kitchen had recorded more than Wyatt realized.
