Chapter 11 - Diane’s Testimony
Diane filed for annulment two days after the wedding.
She surrendered every gift purchased through Tommy’s trust.
She sold the jewelry and transferred the money to the court-appointed recovery fund.
Then she testified.
Wade’s attorney portrayed her as a bitter wife seeking revenge.
Diane did not defend her pride.
“I ignored warning signs.”
The courtroom became still.
“I heard noises upstairs. Ava told me about the door. Wade said she was jealous and I believed him because believing him protected the life I wanted.”
Wade stared at her.
“You’re lying.”
The judge ordered him silent.
Diane continued.
“I was not responsible for what he did before I knew him. But after Ava spoke, I became responsible for what I chose not to see.”
Ava listened from behind Nathan.
For months, she had wanted her mother to say those words.
Now they did not erase the hurt.
But they mattered.
Franklin testified next.
He described Rachel’s final night.
The forged statement.
The trust theft.
The first locked door.
Wade’s attorney asked why anyone should believe a father betraying his own son.
Franklin answered, “Because protecting him destroyed two children and killed a woman.”
The prosecutor played Ava’s accidental video.
Wade’s hand gripping her injured wrist.
His voice ordering her into the room.
Tommy crying behind the door.
Then the living-room recording played.
Not that door.
Franklin’s recognition linked the Virginia room to Wade’s earlier home.
The pattern was undeniable.
Tommy testified by closed-circuit video.
He did not face Wade directly.
He described being locked inside.
Being told his mother was dangerous.
Being forced to sign pages.
Being punished whenever he asked to attend school.
Then the prosecutor asked why he knocked during the living-room confrontation.
Tommy looked toward Ava.
“I heard her voice.”
“What did you think would happen?”
“I thought she came back.”
That answer broke the courtroom.
Ava covered her mouth.
She had not defeated Wade with violence.
