Chapter 14 - The Photograph Rachel Hid
Inside Rachel’s box was one photograph that did not belong with the others.
It showed Wade and Franklin outside a storage facility.
The date was one week before Rachel died.
Megan remembered Rachel saying she had hidden copies of financial records there.
Detective Grant obtained a warrant.
The storage unit contained unopened boxes under Rachel’s maiden name.
Inside were bank records, emails, and a handwritten journal.
Rachel had documented Wade’s threats for nearly two years.
She wrote about Franklin seeing bruises on Tommy and looking away.
She wrote about Wade entering her home.
She wrote about being called unstable whenever she resisted.
Her final entry read:
If anything happens to me, tell Tommy I fought for him every day.
Tommy read the sentence with his therapist.
Then he asked Ava to read it aloud again.
She did.
The records allowed prosecutors to recover additional money from accounts Wade hid overseas.
Tommy’s trust was restored almost completely.
But the money mattered less than the journal.
For the first time, Tommy possessed his mother’s voice without Wade’s interpretation.
Megan petitioned for custody.
The process took nearly a year.
She completed training.
Moved to Virginia temporarily.
Built trust slowly.
Tommy was allowed to choose.
He chose to live with her.
At the final hearing, the judge asked whether he felt safe.
Tommy looked toward Ava, Nathan, and Diane.
Then at Megan.
“Yes.”
“What makes a home safe?” the judge asked.
Tommy thought for a long time.
“A door I can open.”
Afterward, Ava gave him the silver key she had used on the upstairs room.
“I don’t need this anymore,” he said.
“I know.”
“Then why give it to me?”
“So you can decide what it means now.”
Tommy placed it on a chain.
Not as a symbol of captivity.
As proof the door had opened.
Before leaving Virginia, Megan invited Ava to visit Oregon.
