Chapter 1 - The Dead Commander

“Keep moving, impostor.”

The military police officer jerked Commander Hannah Mercer forward by the arm.

The steel chain between her handcuffs snapped tight.

Hannah stumbled across the concrete floor, caught herself against the gray wall, and forced her exhausted body upright.

Red warning lights pulsed through the underground corridor.

Sailors and security staff stopped working to watch her pass.

Some recognized the commander insignia on her stained Navy camouflage uniform.

Others saw only the dirt across her face, the bruises beneath her eyes, and the prisoner restraints around her wrists.

Lieutenant Commander Mason Pike walked beside her with a red-stamped classified file tucked under one arm.

“Don’t look at the personnel,” he said. “You’re already facing espionage charges.”

Hannah turned her head slowly.

“You still haven’t asked where I came from.”

Pike pressed his badge against the interrogation-room scanner.

“I know where you came from.”

The reinforced door unlocked.

He shoved Hannah inside and slammed the file onto the steel table.

Her handcuff chain struck the metal with a sharp crack.

Pike opened the folder.

A casualty photograph stared up at them.

Commander Hannah Elizabeth Mercer.

Declared killed in action.

Three years earlier.

“Commander Mercer died three years ago,” Pike said.

Hannah leaned forward as far as the cuffs allowed.

“Then your system buried the wrong woman.”

The door opened behind Pike.

Fleet Admiral Thomas Calloway entered wearing a decorated black service uniform.

His anger filled the room before he spoke.

“What is the meaning of this?”

Pike handed him the file.

“We caught her entering the restricted tunnel network with Commander Mercer’s identification.”

Calloway flipped through the pages.

His finger stopped on the red casualty stamp.

Then his eyes moved to Hannah’s left wrist.

A pale crescent-shaped scar crossed the skin beneath the cuff.

He had seen that scar before.

Hannah received it pulling Calloway from a burning helicopter eight years earlier.

The admiral’s face lost all color.

“Unlock her,” he ordered.

Pike stared at him.

“Sir?”

“Now.”

Before anyone moved, emergency sirens erupted.

The lights began flashing faster.

A pilot’s broken transmission crackled through the wall intercom.

“Mayday… guidance failure… six souls aboard…”

Hannah spun toward the control-room window.

She recognized the voice.

She stepped toward the radio.

Pike grabbed the chain between her wrists and pulled her back.

Hannah locked eyes with Calloway.

“Uncuff me—or six people die.”
