Chapter 5 - The Ship That Never Sank

Hannah asked for a map of the western Pacific.
Calloway ordered it displayed.
She pointed to an empty region beyond established shipping lanes.
“The Resolute received a false distress signal here.”
Pike shook his head.
“The final report placed the explosion sixty miles south.”
“The final report was rewritten.”
“By whom?”
Hannah looked at him.
“The officer controlling our encrypted communications.”
Pike’s voice tightened.
“I was not assigned to the Resolute.”
“No. You were attached to Fleet Signals Command.”
Calloway checked the archived roster.
Pike’s name appeared.
He had signed the authentication key used on the night the ship vanished.
Pike stepped toward the admiral.
“That proves nothing. Hundreds of officers handled those systems.”
Hannah continued.
“The distress signal directed us into a dead communications zone. Then Nightglass replaced our navigation feed.”
The ship’s crew believed they were sailing south.
In reality, they were guided toward an abandoned naval testing platform hidden among volcanic islands.
Armed contractors boarded the Resolute.
The crew was separated.
Senior officers were interrogated.
Engineers were forced to modify Nightglass.
Those who resisted disappeared.
Calloway’s face hardened.
“Who controlled the platform?”
“We never heard a name.”
Hannah looked at Pike.
“But every command arrived using his authorization code.”
Pike laughed.
“Codes can be stolen.”
“Yes.”
Hannah held his gaze.
“But voices are harder.”
The communications specialist isolated the earlier pilot transmission.
Beneath Ellis’s mayday call was a repeating digital command.
Hannah asked them to slow it down.
A man’s voice emerged.
Maintain deception until vault access.
The room turned toward Pike.
The voice sounded like him.
Not identical enough for a courtroom.
Close enough to destroy his confidence.
Pike stepped backward.
“It’s synthetic.”
Hannah nodded.
“Probably.”
His expression shifted.
He had expected accusation.
Not agreement.
She continued.
“Nightglass can imitate authorized voices. That recording does not prove you gave the order.”
Pike exhaled slightly.
Then Hannah added, “But your fear proves you know who did.”
Calloway moved between them.
“Who controls the system?”
Pike’s phone began vibrating.
He looked down.
No caller identification.
Hannah recognized the pattern.
Three short vibrations.
One long.
A signal used aboard the hidden platform before a prisoner was removed.
“Don’t answer it,” she said.
Pike looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because they’re checking whether you’re still useful.”
The phone stopped.
A message appeared.
OPEN VAULT OR MERCER TALKS.
Calloway read it over Pike’s shoulder.
The room went silent.
May you like
Pike’s face collapsed.
👉 Pike was involved—but the message revealed that he had also become expendable to the people who kept Hannah imprisoned.
