Who Told You I Was Dead? / Chapter 6 / 27

Chapter 6 - Vanessa Without an Audience

I found Vanessa alone the next morning in the spa atrium, of all places.

The resort wasn’t fully open to the public yet; Daniel had limited access overnight under the excuse of a “security event.” The spa smelled of eucalyptus and polished stone, with soft music floating through air that had no business being this calm.

Vanessa stood beside the indoor reflecting pool in cream silk and sunglasses, though we were inside. Her poise was back in place, but barely. She had always looked like a woman who believed elegance was armor. Today it looked thinner.

She started to walk away when she saw me. I stepped in front of her.

“We need to talk.”

“I have nothing to say to you.”

“You had plenty to say when you had a leash in your hand.”

Her lips pressed together. “You broke into private property.”

“I built private property.”

That made her shoulders stiffen. She pushed the sunglasses up into her hair and looked at me directly for the first time since the lobby. Fear sat under the arrogance now, moving restlessly.

“Did Daniel tell you who I was?” I asked.

“He told me enough.”

“Try again.”

Her jaw flexed. “He told me Amelia Sterling died three years ago in a boating explosion. He told me there were… situations after that. Con artists. Women who claimed to be connected to the family. He said if anyone came here looking like a story, I was to keep them out.”

“Looking like a story?”

Her eyes flicked away. “He had an old photo of you in his office. I saw it once.”

There it was. Not accident. Not random cruelty. She had recognized something.

“So when you saw my face,” I said softly, “you thought dead women should stay outside.”

Vanessa folded her arms tightly. “I thought you were dangerous.”

“Because he told you to.”

“Because people like Daniel don’t tell me things unless they matter.”

People like Daniel. Not my husband, not the executive, not family. That phrasing told me more than she meant to reveal.

I stepped closer. “Why were you really scared when I pulled out the badge?”

She swallowed. “Because he said that if Amelia Sterling ever walked back into this resort, everything would collapse.”

That hit harder than the leash had.

Everything. Not grief. Not reputation. Collapse.

“Insurance,” I said. “How much?”

Vanessa’s face changed again—this time not into fear but into irritation at herself. She knew she had already said too much.

“I don’t know the number.”

“Liar.”

She leaned in. “You want the truth? Daniel said the payout saved this place. Saved the expansion. Saved everyone’s jobs. He said without what happened after your death, the resort would have been gutted.”

“So he turned my disappearance into a rescue story.”

“He turned it into survival.”

I held her gaze. “And you turned it into a chain around my throat.”

For the first time, shame touched her mouth. Not enough to absolve her. Just enough to prove she wasn’t made of stone.

Before she could answer, her phone buzzed. Daniel. I saw the screen light before she turned it over.

She drew a breath, straightened, and put her armor back on. “You should be careful, Amelia.”

“That sounds almost human.”

“It’s not concern,” she said. “It’s warning.”

May you like

Then she walked away, leaving the pool surface perfectly still behind her while my mind locked around the words that mattered most: if Amelia Sterling ever walked back into this resort, everything would collapse.

📖 Vanessa didn’t just admit Daniel warned her about me—she confirmed my return threatened money, power, and a version of survival built on my death. 👇
