Chapter 2

PART 2:
Three months earlier, his wife had been living in a one-bedroom apartment above a closed bakery.

Not because she wanted to leave him.

Because he had told her to.

The night she left the mansion, it was raining.

She was seven months pregnant.

She had packed one suitcase, two baby blankets, and the sonogram photo he never looked at.

He stood at the top of the marble staircase while the woman from the boardroom stood behind him in a silk robe, pretending to be concerned.

“You’re making a mistake,” his wife had whispered.

Mr. Hartwell’s jaw tightened.

“The mistake was believing you loved me for me.”

She looked like the words took the air out of her body.

“I never asked you for anything.”

“You asked for my name,” he said. “My house. My protection. And now a child I’m supposed to accept because you say so.”

His wife put a hand over her stomach.

“She is yours.”

The woman behind him sighed.

“Is this really necessary? She’s clearly upset.”

His wife looked past him.

“You told him.”

The woman smiled softly.

“I told him the truth.”

But it was not the truth.

It was a story built carefully over months.

A deleted message here.

A forged hotel receipt there.

A photograph taken out of context outside a clinic where his wife had gone for a prenatal appointment.

The woman beside him was not just a guest in his house.

She was his company’s strategic advisor.

Brilliant.

Polished.

Hungry.

She had helped him prepare a major merger, one that would move Hartwell Global into a new era and give her a powerful executive seat once the deal closed.

But there was one problem.

His marriage.

His father’s old trust.

And any legitimate Hartwell heir.

Mr. Hartwell did not know the full terms of his father’s estate.

He had always hated legal details.

He knew he controlled the company.

He knew he had money.

He knew people obeyed him.

That had always been enough.

His wife had tried to tell him someone was keeping her away from him.

Her calls went unanswered.

Her texts showed as read, then disappeared from his phone.

Every email she sent bounced through his assistant’s office and vanished.

By the end, he believed what everyone around him wanted him to believe.

That his poor wife had married him for money.

That the baby might not be his.

That she was using pregnancy as a weapon.

So he cut off her cards.

Changed the locks.

Sent all communication through attorneys.

And convinced himself that cruelty was strength.

👉 But after he erased her from his life, the baby’s health forced her to return to the one place she was told she did not belong.
