Chapter 1

The conference room went silent when Audrey pushed the door open.
Glass walls.
Marble table.
Four attorneys in dark suits.
Dominic Hale standing at the far end like a man used to owning every room he entered.
And his family seated beside him, staring at Audrey like she was dirt tracked onto a clean floor.
Audrey held her newborn daughter against her chest with one arm.
With the other, she threw the divorce papers onto the glass table.
The sound cracked through the room.
Every head turned.
Dominic stood so fast his chair scraped backward.
“You can’t just walk in here,” he said.
Audrey’s face was pale.
Her hair was pulled back loosely.
Her coat was cheap, still damp from the rain outside.
The baby against her chest wore a tiny pink hat and still had a hospital bracelet around one wrist.
Audrey looked at Dominic.
The man she had married in secret.
The man who once promised her that money would never matter between them.
The man now standing behind a team of lawyers while his family prepared to erase her with a check.
Audrey tightened her arm around the baby.
“I’m not here for your money,” she said.
Dominic’s mother gave a sharp little laugh.
“Of course you aren’t.”
Audrey ignored her.
She reached into her bag and pulled out a folded document.
The birth certificate.
Her hand trembled once, but her voice stayed steady.
She lifted it in front of Dominic.
“I’m here because she has your name.”
Dominic’s eyes dropped to the paper.
Then to the baby.
Then back to the paper.
His face drained of color.
On the birth certificate, under Father, was his full legal name.
Dominic James Hale.
For the first time, the billionaire looked powerless.
At the far end of the table, Dominic’s father stood abruptly.
His face was no longer cold.
It was terrified.
He looked at the baby.
Then at his son.
“Dominic,” he said, his voice breaking. “She told the truth.”
Dominic turned slowly.
“What?”
His father swallowed.
“I was the one who hid it.”
The room stopped breathing.
Audrey did not move.

She only held her daughter closer as every lie that had crushed her for nine months began to crack open in front of the people who had believed them.
👉 But before the truth exploded in that room, Audrey had once believed Dominic Hale was nothing like his family.
