Chapter 3

Audrey called Dominic’s office.
Blocked.
She sent emails.
No answer.
She went to Hale Tower and was stopped in the lobby by security guards who refused to look her in the eye.
One of them finally whispered, “Ma’am, he said not to let you up.”
That night, Audrey sat on her bathroom floor with one hand over her stomach and cried so hard she could not breathe.
Not because she was poor.
Not because she was scared.
Because the man who cried over their baby had somehow become a man willing to erase her.
Or so she thought.
For months, Dominic’s family made sure the world saw Audrey exactly the way they wanted.
A clinic nurse.
A gold digger.
A mistake.
A girl who had tricked their son.
His mother told charity friends that Audrey had “targeted” Dominic.
His sister posted vague quotes online about women who chase rich men.
His father’s lawyers sent letter after letter, each colder than the last.
Stop contacting Mr. Hale.
Stop making false claims.
Stop using the Hale name.
Audrey stopped trying to reach them after the seventh month.
Not because she gave up.
Because pregnancy had turned into survival.
She worked until her ankles swelled.
She took buses to appointments.
She assembled a crib alone.
She cried only in the shower because she did not want her baby to learn sadness before she learned light.
Then her daughter was born early during a thunderstorm.
Small.
Beautiful.
Fierce.
Audrey named her Lily Grace Hale.
The nurse asked if the father would be present.
Audrey looked at the empty chair beside her hospital bed.
“No,” she whispered.
Still, she put Dominic’s name on the birth certificate.
Not to trap him.
Not to shame him.
Because it was true.
And after everything his family had stolen from her, Audrey refused to let them steal that from her daughter too.
Two days after the birth, while Lily slept in a clear bassinet beside her, Audrey received another envelope.
Final divorce meeting.
Private conference room.
Settlement offer.
The message was clear.
Come quietly.
Take the money.
Disappear.
Audrey looked at her newborn’s hospital bracelet.
Then at the divorce papers.
And something inside her hardened.
May you like
She had been quiet long enough.
👉 That morning, Audrey walked into Hale Tower with her baby, the birth certificate, and the truth no check could buy.
