Chapter 8

Two years after the conference room, Audrey returned to Hale Tower for a different reason.

Not a divorce meeting.

Not a settlement.

Not humiliation.

Dominic had created a maternal legal aid foundation in Lily’s name, funded privately from his own shares, not company money.

The foundation helped women who had been silenced by wealthy families, pressured into unfair settlements, or kept away from legal help during pregnancy.

Audrey agreed to attend the opening only because the foundation’s first director was a woman attorney she trusted.

At the podium, Dominic did not make himself the hero.

He looked at the crowd and said,

“This foundation exists because I failed the woman I should have believed. My daughter is not a scandal. Her mother is not a gold digger. Audrey told the truth from the beginning.”

Audrey stood in the back holding Lily’s hand.

Reporters turned toward her.

This time, their cameras did not feel like weapons.

After the speech, Dominic walked over slowly.

Lily, now a bright-eyed toddler, reached for him.

He picked her up and kissed her cheek.

Then he looked at Audrey.

“Thank you for coming.”

Audrey nodded.

“You said the right thing.”

“I should have said it sooner.”

“Yes,” she said. “You should have.”

He accepted that without flinching.

Across the room, Dominic’s father was absent.

He had tried once to send Audrey a letter.

She returned it unopened.

Some wounds do not require an audience to heal.

Some people do not get access just because guilt finally finds them.

That evening, Audrey drove home with Lily sleeping in the car seat.

Rain tapped gently against the windshield.

Not like the storm from the day she walked into that conference room.

Softer.

Cleaner.

She remembered the glass table.

The lawyers.

Dominic’s cold face.

His mother’s cruel smile.

The moment she lifted the birth certificate and watched their power tremble.

Back then, she thought she was walking in alone.

But she had not been.

Lily had been against her chest.

Truth had been in her hand.

May you like

And courage had been somewhere inside her, even when she could barely feel it.

👉 That night, Audrey made one promise her daughter would grow up never doubting.
