Chapter 1

“Leaving that trash was the best decision of my life.”

Ethan said it into the microphone with a smile.

The wedding hall went silent.

Not because the guests were shocked.

Because most of them wanted to see what would happen next.

The ballroom was glowing with gold lights, white roses, and polished wood floors.

A string quartet had stopped mid-song.

The bride stood behind Ethan in her white gown, gripping her bouquet with both hands.

And in the middle of the dance floor stood Noah.

Eight years old.

White shirt.

Black bow tie.

Black suspenders.

Small wooden gift box in his left hand.

He did not cry.

He did not run.

He only stared at his father.

Ethan pointed toward the guest table where Noah’s mother sat with her hands folded tightly in her lap.

“That woman spent years trying to drag me down,” Ethan said, louder now. “But tonight, my real life begins.”

A few people shifted uncomfortably.

The bride’s smile weakened.

Noah took one slow step forward.

He lifted a small microphone to his chest.

“I brought you a gift, Dad.”

Ethan looked down at him and laughed.

A cruel, careless laugh.

“A gift?” he said. “From you?”

Noah held out the wooden box.

For one second, Ethan hesitated.

Then he snatched it from the boy’s hand.

The wrapping paper slipped off and fell beside Noah’s polished black shoes.

Ethan flipped open the lid with his thumb.

Whatever he saw inside made his face change.

His mouth opened.

The confidence drained from his eyes.

Under the bright stage lights, the thin red marks on his forehead and cheek became visible.

The bride stepped closer, her voice shaking.

“Ethan, what’s inside?”

Noah did not move.

He only lifted the microphone again and pointed at the inside of the wooden lid.

“Look under the lid.”

Ethan looked down.

Then back at his son.

And for the first time in Noah’s life, his father looked afraid of him.

👉 But that little wooden box had been prepared hours earlier, after Ethan made one last mistake inside Noah’s apartment.
